Threading Phenolic Sheet for Machine Screws
How would you thread [embedded reinforcement in a hull of a Boston Whaler boat that is made with] phenolic for machine screw? What size screw would you use?
Re: Threading Phenolic Sheet for Machine Screws
Use a standard metal tap to cut threads into phenolic sheet material.rashidychem7 wrote:How would you thread [embedded reinforcement in a hull of a Boston Whaler boat that is made with] phenolic for machine screw?
The tap size diameter will depend on the thickness of the phenolic sheet and what is going to be retained. I don't have universal rule of thumb to suggest here. Inquire with Boston Whaler ENGINEERING for their specifications for cutting threads into the phenolic sheet material embedded in a specific model boat at a specific location for retaining a specific device to be mounted. Or use common sense. Or consult a materials engineer for advice. Or conduct a test with a sample of identical phenolic sheet and test until failure using the maximum anticipated load.rashidychem7 wrote:What size screw would you use?
Generally for very high loads, phenolic sheet won't be used. Instead of phenolic, an aluminum plate might be embedded.
For a machine screw thread in phenolic, a 10-32 thread would be typical.
