Threading Phenolic Sheet for Machine Screws

How would you thread [embedded reinforcement in a hull of a Boston Whaler boat that is made with] phenolic for machine screw? What size screw would you use?

Use a standard metal tap to cut threads into phenolic sheet material.

The tap size diameter will depend on the thickness of the phenolic sheet and what is going to be retained. I don't have universal rule of thumb to suggest here. Inquire with Boston Whaler ENGINEERING for their specifications for cutting threads into the phenolic sheet material embedded in a specific model boat at a specific location for retaining a specific device to be mounted. Or use common sense. Or consult a materials engineer for advice. Or conduct a test with a sample of identical phenolic sheet and test until failure using the maximum anticipated load.

Generally for very high loads, phenolic sheet won't be used. Instead of phenolic, an aluminum plate might be embedded.

For a machine screw thread in phenolic, a 10-32 thread would be typical.
