Anchor Chain and Line

Postby bonefixr@gmail.com » Thu Sep 05, 2024 7:58 pm

Q1: what length and size of anchor chain is appropriate safely to anchor a 1999 Montauk 17 in ten feet of water?

BACKSTORY. My 1999 MONTAUK 17 boat is used primarily in the Hudson River or its tributaries. I have never needed an anchor, but I now intend to the use the boat more than previously.

The water depth [where I will be anchoring will typically be] less than 10-feet deep.

An anchor rode consisting of six-feet of chain and 150-feet of 3/8-inch-diameter nylon line should be plenty for most situations.

For the rope portion, a three-strand line is easier to grip than a smooth double-braided line.If you don't like rusty chain you can get stainless steel chain at a higher cost. Chain of 1/4-inch or 5/16-inch would be okay to use

The 150-foot anchor rode is a bit more than you will need for anchoring in ten feet of water, but having a long length of line always on the boat is a good idea. You never know when you might need 150-feet of line for some unusual situation.

Typically for anchoring your boat while you remain aboard and attending to the boat, a ratio of the anchor rode length to the water depth of 5:1 will be sufficient for all but hurricane conditions.

When at anchor the boat will tend to be blow around by the wind. The wind in confined anchorages can often change direction, and the boat can swing to as much as 180-degrees from where you started.
