Trailer for 1971 OUTRAGE 21

Postby SAMBONES » Thu Sep 05, 2024 9:42 pm

I just bought my dream boat a [1971--always use four digits for years] OUTRAGE 21 ribside model. The problem: the boat is in the water with no trailer for it. I have set up trailers before using a template, but this boat is two hours from me. I am purchasing a tandem trailer with bunks this weekend. I need some approximate heights and widths to at least get boat securely on the new trailer for the ride home. Once home I can fine tune the trailer configuration.

I will appreciate any illustrations or diagrams [showing the trailer set up for an OUTRAGE 21].

My giggest concern is height of bunks to [allow the hull to] clear [the trailer] fenders and center-to center-width of the bunk boards.

I've used keel rollers in past: are they needed or not?

Thanks,

Sam

Aside: I sold my KATAMA 16.

I just read the Reference articles on "Trailering a Boston Whaler} and realized I was not so knowledgable with my Katama 16. There was a lot of good reading there.

The keel rollers are recommended to take most all the weight, and bunks are to only to keep the hull from rocking and should only take a little weight.

Again, all comments welcome.

In your situation I would bring two dolly jacks and some a number of lengths of 4x4 lumber with me. Once you get the boat on the trailer you can tweak the bunk positions while holding the boat up with some lumber and the two dolly jacks. You will use the 4x4 lumber between the jack and the hull.

Also, if the launching ramp area is not busy--so don't try this on a weekend afternoon with great weather--you can probably load the boat, make some observations, immediately relaunch the boat, change the trailer set-up, and try again. If no one is around the ramp and there is more than one lane for the launch ramp, you might be able to leave the boat right at the ramp, pull the trailer up to level ground, and make the changes there.

jimh--thank you.

I am lucky and my neighbor is friends with a local marina. They are willing to hoist boat onto trailer and let me adjust rollers and bunks. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Thanks again, have a great weekend.
