Suzuki DF 150 on a 190 Outrage
Suzuki DF 150 on a 190 Outrage
Has a 190 Outrage been re-powered with a DF 150 Suzuki?
Give me advice on the combination of a Suzuki DF150 and OUTRAGE 190.
Give me advice on a propeller for a Suzuki DF150 on an OUTRAGE 190.

Re: Suzuki DF 150 on a 190 Outrage
There haven't been many members who repowered with the DF 150. Mostly due to the engine weight.
The DF 150 is quite heavy at about 511-lbs. This is in contrast to the DF140a which has been wickedly popular in the last few years since it only weights 396-lbs. In comparison, the Mercury 150 FourStroke weights 455 lbs and the Yamaha F150/V Max is 478/480 lbs.
I read good things on those that selected the DF 150.
A good read from Hookam on his DF150 repower and prop testing.

For prop I would go with Tom Clark's recommendations but in 2" less pitch due to the added weight of the Outrage 190 versus the Outrage 18. Would also test Suzuki ss 15x19 3 blade.
Pay attention to mounting height. At least 2 holes up, top bolt in 3rd hole down from top.

Re: Suzuki DF 150 on a 190 Outrage
Thanks for the information. The weight is a concern.
Re: Suzuki DF 150 on a 190 Outrage
It is recommended that you simulate the new engine by placing added weight in the splashwell. Bags of sand, water etc.
Note the static waterline changes and how the hull performs going on and off plane.

That is a great suggestion. Thanks. It has the original 150 OptiMax on it now.
Re: Suzuki DF 150 on a 190 Outrage
For readers who have re-powered a 190 OUTRAGE with a Mercury 150 XL engine:
Are you pleased with the overall performance of the 190 OUTRAGE with a Mercury 150 XL engine?
Has re-powering a 190 OUTRAGE with a Mercury 150 XL produced any undesirable outcome?
The Suzuki and Mercury engines are my current options for re-powering the 190 OUTRAGE.
The Mercury 150 XL costs about $1,600 more than the Suzuki DF 150, but then Mercury 150 XL engine weight is about 60-lbs lighter.
The retail new engine market is really crazy now.
So far I have had no luck [finding] a Yamaha engine.

Re: Suzuki DF 150 on a 190 Outrage
Regarding the proposed re-power with a "Mercury 150 XL" engine, I am not sure which engine you refer to. The "XL" usually indicates the shaft length of the engine is 25-inches, and the "XL" is not the model designator of the engine. Mercury makes 150-HP engines in three model designators:
- Pro XS
- SeaPro
- FourStroke
Re: Suzuki DF 150 on a 190 Outrage
The DF150 is not on the recommended list by many whaler veterans due to its weight. The DF140a is the recommended engine.
As for the Mercury 150 FourStroke or Mercury Pro XS, these have received postiive reviews from whaler owners who installed them for a repower.
As for engine availability, it varies by brand and model and location. For engines larger than 50hp the average wait is 3-9 months from the time the dealer orders it. Higher horsepower engines appear to be taking the longest. Dealer time estimates to customers have consistently been overly optimistic.

Re: Suzuki DF 150 on a 190 Outrage
The Mercury I was looking at and is available is the basic 4 stroke engine.

All the three models I mentioned are four-stroke-power-cycle engines, and their powerheads are probably just about identical.
If you won't clearly indicate the engine you want to discuss, it is going to be hard to discuss the right engine.
Re: Suzuki DF 150 on a 190 Outrage
As best as I can tell, the engine I was quoted was [a Mercury 150-HP] FourStroke model.
The model number written on the quote is M150 XL.
If that is not a complete model number I will get with the dealership tomorrow. Thanks.

Re: Suzuki DF 150 on a 190 Outrage
Thanks for clarifying that you think the engine you might be buying is a Mercury 150 FourStroke model (with 25-inch shaft).
That is the typical recreational-version engine now in Mercury's line of engines. The Pro XS is also a popular choice as an alternative, for reasons I don't quite understand. I think the Pro XS is aimed at higher boat speed applications.
That you can get ANY new engine in stock from a dealer is really quite good fortune.
For example, my local dealer sells Suzuki engines. He told me he ordered 23 engines, and, as of a month ago, he had only received two engines from that order. The demand for outboard engines seems to very strong, and the supply is limited.

Re: Suzuki DF 150 on a 190 Outrage
I have a 2003 Nantucket 190 powered by a 2016 Suzuki DF140a. The Nantucket was renamed the 190 Outrage in 2006.
I would be hesitant to put more than the rated 510 lbs. maximum engine weight on the transom because of the potential for porpoising. If you go with the Suzuki 150hp engine I would recommend trim tabs to help keep the bow down when needed.

Re: Suzuki DF 150 on a 190 Outrage
Thanks. At this time I am leaning towards the Mercury 150 Four Stroke it is only about 30 lbs heavier than the Optimax currently on the boat. I did have a 17 Outrage with the Suzuki DF 140. It was a sweet motor but I never got the ride exactly dialed in. Always rode high in the bow. Any kind of chop was made worse because of that.
Thanks again for your input.

Re: Suzuki DF 150 on a 190 Outrage
Masbama,
Tell me what you like and what you don't like about the 140 on your Nantucket. I found a DF 150 but ruled it out because of the wt. I have not looked for a 140 thinking it may be underpowered. Thanks. You and I communicated a few years back when I re-power the 17 Outrage. Thanks again.

For any engine you select, you will want the motor to be installed at least 2 holes up (top bolt in the 3rd hole down from the top) and select a stern lifting stainless steel prop.
When you select the engine, check back here for prop recommendations.
