Night Vision Camera for Use with SIMRAD NSX 3012 Multi-function Display

Postby AllDry » Sun Mar 09, 2025 5:10 pm

Q1: what night vision camera for use with the SIMRAD NSX 3012 multi-function display would give performance comparable to the SIONYX night vision camera?

ASIDE: I do not see how to use an analog device like Sionyx [night vision camera].

[Moderator's note: the particular SIONYX night vision camera is not specified in this query. For purposes of answering the question, until otherwise clarified, readers should assume that the SIONYX night vision camera to be used as the standard of comparison in the SIONYX Model CO01280 NIGHTWAVE Marine NIght Vision Camera that retails for $1,895.]

[Also, the SIONYX camera is mentioned as being an "analog" camera, but exactly what context is to used to assess the "analog" nature of the camera is not specified.]

According to the literature from SIONYX, their NIGHTWAVE Marine Color Night VIsion Camera can provide either a legacy NTSC output signal (which you might consider to be an analog signal) or by using a USB link a digital television signal in the 720-line Progressive format with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels at a frame rate of 30-Hz.

According to SIMRAD literature, the 3012 multi-function display can "support IP Camera"--whatever that means. However, I didn't find any mention that the NSX 3012 has a "video" input.

If the display has a video input, you could connect the NTSC output of the SIONYX camera to that video input. If the video input supports the legacy NTSC video standard, you should get an image on the display.

Note you may have to adjust the settings of the NSX 3012 in order to present the option for VIDEO onto the screen of the user interface of the display.

I suggest you contact both SIMRAD and SIONYX to see if these two products are compatible.

I am confused by the responses. The Sionyx site under MFD compatibility matrix clearly states the Nightwave is not compatible with the NSX 3012:

the Nightwave seems to have a USB-A and USB-C cable available but no input on NSX

If SIONYX indicates their camera is NOT compatible with the SIMRAD NSX 3012, then I guess that is the final word. Apparently the SIMRAD NSX 3012 display does NOT have a video input.

Also, before dropping $2,000 on a "marine" night vision camera, you might try out something a bit less expensive. For example, you can get a WYSE camera like this one for much less:

WYSE CAM PAN V3

The image quality if quite impressive. It does not have a long-focal length zoom lens, however.

If the SIONYX new model will output high-definition digital images, that will be an improvement over their old-fashioned NTSC video of prior models.
