Finding Water In Hull

Postby garyyork » Mon Mar 09, 2020 12:24 am

[Can the intrusion of] lots of water [into the interior foam of a Boston Whaler Unibond hull be detected by weighing the hull]?

BACKSTORY: I bought a well worn 1980 MONTAUK with a bad and weak repair to the forward part of the hull, perhaps done with putty. On my very first outing in rough water, a foot long split happened. Hundreds of gallons water went inside the hull. The water drained out the large crack when back on the trailer for 30-minutes.

[The boat damage] was an insurance claim from my insurance for total hull loss.

Boston Whaler said the hull cannot be repaired.

I had a gel coat repair guy do a wonderful repair and spent the next 12 years out in very rough water.

I asked the repairman if the hull will ever break open at his repair. He said, “NOPE not there.”

I put it to the test and it passed.

The repair was done by Ashland Wood Specialty in San Leandro, California.

Questions about methods to detect water in Boston Whaler Unibond hulls are frequently asked. A comprehensive answer is found at

Q3: Is There Water In My Hull?

If Boston Whaler declared one of their hulls as “unrepairable”, and the hull was insured against total loss at an agreed value, I would not put myself at risk using that hull in the open ocean.
