1988 MONTAUK 17 Windshield Well Nuts

Postby TurfyRocket » Sun Aug 17, 2025 3:40 pm

Q1: where do well nuts go and what size are the well nuts [as used on the windshield] on a 1988 MONTAUK 17?

The [owner's] manual has [the well nuts] as part number 82138500.

[Moderator's note: comments made as a sidebar to the discussion of well nuts have been moved to their own thread. Also, for those not familiar with the term "well nuts" the intended meaning here is:

Well nuts are also known as rubber well nuts, captive nuts, or expansion nuts, and are a type of fastener used to create a threaded connection in materials where a traditional threaded hole or nut might not be feasible or practical. They consist of a rubber or elastomeric body with a metal (usually brass) threaded insert embedded within. When a bolt is tightened into the well nut, the rubber compresses and expands, creating a secure and vibration-dampening hold.

As per ChatGPT

What: Boston Whaler part 82138500 = Well-Nut, #10-32 (G-1032).

Where: (on a 1988 Montauk 17): used to fasten the plexiglass windshield to the center console (rubber well-nuts in the console, machine screws through the windshield).

Most classic 17-footers use eight mounts (four-per-side along the lower edge).

Super Sport/SSL variants may use about 12.

UPD Plastics
Sizes/details to know:
Thread: #10-32
Console hole: typically 3/8-inch for these well-nuts
Often paired with nylon spacers or bushings between the acrylic and console.

If you want hardware to match: use #10-32 machine screws; length depends on windshield thickness and spacer, usually around 3/4 to 1-inch.

The well-nut itself is the expanding rubber insert; many suppliers list it as G-1032 / Q10-32.

Hope this helps, Ken
