1968 SPORT 13 Rub Rail Replacement
1968 SPORT 13 Rub Rail Replacement
Redoing my 13' 1968 Sport, any thoughts on the best Rub Rail option ?
Re: Rub Rail
If or when I ever find the time and energy I plan to replace the rub rail on our 1981 Sport 13. I believe the classic rub rails are more attractive than functional. The new rub rails on Boston Whalers are less attractive but more functional. I will replace the original rub rail on our classic with one of the new ones if it will fit well.

Re: Rub Rail
I give my thoughts in the FAQ answer.
Re: Rub Rail
I used the 3 piece rub rail from Boston Whaler for my 1967 13 footer. I really like the way it looks and it covers up the imperfections along the edge. When you install it, do it on a hot day so it is easier to bend. I also recommend screws over rivets in case you need to re-paint or do touch ups down the road you can easily back out the screws.

There is a better URL link in the article mentioned in the FAQ. I suggest reading the FAQ, the article it recommends, and following that link.
http://www.rubrailsdirect.com/Boston_Wh ... b-rail.htm
Note: some links on the BarbourPlastics.com website re-direct to URL's with RubRailsDirect.com as the host.
Re: Rub Rail
Thanks for all of the replies. I went to the Barbour site and they have a lot of product. My ability to visualize what [the replacement rub rail components] would look like on my boat is limited.

Re: Rub Rail
What type of screws are best used to attach the 3 piece rub rail on a 13' Whaler? For example, does it matter if they're flat head, pan head, other?

Re: Rub Rail
Good questions. Will a pan head screw interfere with the vinyl insert snapping in place?
Re: Rub Rail
I'd use the rivets. Since the fiberglass is so thin, the screw holds on less than 1 thread. The rivet grabs around the whole circumference of the hole and has no sharp edges to enlarge and loosen the hole like the screw does. Easy to remove by drilling off the head with a 3/16" drill, then push it through into the foam and install a new one.
Re: 1968 SPORT 13 Rub Rail Replacement
I went with #10 pan head screws on mine. Tried a couple with #12's, but it showed too much when you put the insert in.
I was able to do the complete install by myself, but if you have a helper, it will definitely go smoother. I used the quick clamps and did a small section at a time as I worked my way around the boat. Started about 2 feet from the transom on the port side. Pre-drilled and sank the screws in place. Then once the entire rub rail was in place and cut to fit, I went back and caulked and used a counter sink bit on the rail to get the screws essentially flush.
I went with the all black 3 piece kit direct from Whaler.

Re: 1968 SPORT 13 Rub Rail Replacement
The boats I have purchased (13-15 foot, 1965-1973) have riveted rub rails that have failed. It is VERY easy to pull out the remaining rivets. I re-instal with #10 pan head and 5200 giving more grip than just the fiberglass.
