Freshwater boat. Could you guys give me an estimate on vale please. Thank you-JACK. P.S. they are asking $5500 o/b/o

Back in October, I bought a 1985 Whaler Sport, 1985 Johnson 70HP with oil injection and tilt/trim, and galvanized trailer. The previous owner also tossed in a wide collection of goodies: skis, tube, PFDs, depth finder, etc.

He asked $4500 and I paid $4000 for it... at the time.

Since then, the engine died (about a month ago).

The lesson: have somebody really GOOD take a careful look at the engine before buying.

I had the mechanic at a local boat dealer examine the boat & engine for me before I bought it. I'm convinced that all they did was a quick compression test for $60. What they failed to discover was that:
* it was a 1980 engine on a 1985 lower unit
* the engine had been previously rebuilt and was 0.030 overbored.

Fortunately, a friend referred me to an excellent local mechanic (with several other references). $1400 later, it's back in my garage where it belongs. I took it out yesterday, and it runs better than ever!

Now that all's said and done...

I LOVE MY WHALER! It's a great boat.

Good luck with your quest! Keep us posted.

A 15' 1987 with a 70 HP Johnson, excellent condition, just sold here for $5,500.

I'm selling a 15' / 50 HP Yamaha, excellent condition, for $5,000

Both with trailers.

Thanks guys, I just purchased a 1975 `17 Currituck-side console with bench seats. I went for the larger boat but needs alittle more work-paid $4750-freshwater boat in average condition. It has a 1975 85h.p. Johnson-it flies, but trolls a little fast, I might swap for a 70h.p. The 70h.p. loses only 8mph, but trolls slower and gets better mpg and is lighter! Regards-JACK.
