I bought a 1986 Whaler 27 (standard model, not the full cabin) a few months ago and have now had it in the water for about a month. So far I am extremely impressed with its handling and performance. The boat has a completely different feel than my Montauk had. It is a much heavier and more powerful boat with a very deep vee. My boat has twin 1991 Merc 200's (non efi). It climbs up on plane very quickly and smoothly. It accelerates in kind of a linear fashion to its top end of about 45 knots. It is very smooth through chop and waves, as it is heavy enought to slice through waves which would have launched the Montauk. This weekend we are taking it from Lake Washington out to the salt water and further exploring its handling. We will also be exploring its fuel burn rate, which I understand can be over 40 GPH at WOT. I hope to find a somewhat more economical throttle setting! My first impression has been of an extremely capable boat. |
