Hi,
My name is Barnett & I live in Sturbridge, Ma. I'm mostly a fresh water fishrman. Bass & trout. I love to fly fish. I have about 50 ponds & lakes around my area. I've been lurking for a while & talking to a few of you off line about your boats. This is my first post. I just want to say that there is a wealth of information here! You guy's really know Whalers.

I got into Whalers back when I was a teenager. Some of my uncles had big Chris Craft cabin crusers down at Cape Cod & I had a cusin that had a 13'foot Whaler. We had a blast in that little boat.

Anyhow, I started looking for my first boat to be used primarily for fresh water fishing, a Montauk, in late 99 but couldn't find a used one that I liked. I ended up going to Gauche Bros. marina (local Whaler dealer now out of buisness)to check out a new one. After talking to the salesguy & getting my wifes input I ended up getting swayed to a 16' Dauntless instead. Sales guy stating "more boat for the same $$" & wife loving the "versitility". We never got to try out the 2 boats. The dealer never offered & being a novice boat buyer I didn't know better. I was really torn between the two boats at the time, as I've always loved the Montauk. So we ended up getting the Dauntless with all the options. Fishing package, ski package, bimini, etc, etc.

Skip ahead to today...As it turns out, when I go out, I'm usually by myself :>! I found myself wishing I had got the Montauk. I think its better suited to what I want to do. I trailer all the time. It would be lighter to tow, & easier to put on/off the trailer by myself. Also, would fit in the garage & have a bit shallower draft to boot. Don't get me wrong the 16' Dauntless is a damn beautiful boat, but in some ways its "to much" boat for what I want to do.

Now hears where you all are going to think I'm crazy. I went to the New England boat show with my father inlaw (he fishes with me from time to time). Nausett Marine had both boats on display so I could really compare them side by side. We both found ourselves drawn to the Montauk. I felt as strongly about it as I did in 99. It really comes down to personal taste, but the Montauk is just "my" Whaler style.

I ended up buying a Montauk this week w/the 90 HP 2 stroke Merc. Whaler only offering Merc was not a problem for me, I would have chosen Merc anyhow. It's a good engine & I have the same engine on the Dauntless. I made the purchase of the Montauk contingent on the sale of the Dauntless, which I will be posting here on the forum.

Sorry for the long post but just wanted folks to know where I was coming from.

Thanks to all of you that have helped me out so far.

Barnett

Hi Barnett, we talked off-Forum a few months back. I don't think you'll have trouble selling the Dauntless, but maybe not the success on this Forum as you could get elsewhere; Boat Trader On-line, Soundings, etc.
I'm sure you'll be real pleased with the Montauk! Don

Glad you could share your expeirence with us. I have a '79 Montauk that I purchased almost 2 years ago. Boy, Have I been missing out! I looked hard and long for a BW, even went to Cape Cod with a friend to pick up a 20' Outrage for him. You made a good choice. It's hard to beat a Montauk. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the input & support guy's. I'll post the Dauntless on the other sites you've mentioned.

Even though I've been shoveling snow all day I've still got Whaler fever big time :>!

No one makes a 100hp 2 stroke? I always get max hp. I could have put the 225 Optimax on my 1999 21' Outrage but the extra weight and less hp turned me off. I got the 250 Blue Water. Fuel economy is not an issue because whatever it costs I am going to be out there zipping around.
