Plaese bear with me I have only owned a boat for 2 months. What causes steering to go out of alignment it is the old type steering teleflex, can I fix this myself or will I need to go to a mechanic.

Joem.

Don't worry about being new. We're all always learning. You need to give some more informattion. What kind of boat, size, what kind/size of motor (year on both) and any other information as to what the problem is.

I think you'll get the input you need.

I have a 1965 Nauset new to me with a 1985 90 horse merc. I took it out today and it pushed to the right like it was out of alignment that is the only way I can explain it. I raised the trim but it didn't get rid of it 100 persent is their anything else I can do.

joem,

Is the motor mounted level on the transom?

Does the boat turn to the left/fight even with the motor visually alinged "straight" and held in that position? (forget the steering wheel alighment for now)

joem,

What about the small trim tab located on the lower unit just above the propeller. Is it "fairly" straight. (My boat is at the dealer so I can't ecplain exacty.)

Not knowing all the details it is difficult to come up with an answer.
Most likely problem is the trim tab, just above the propeller.
If the steering works and turns the engine right and left but the boat pulls to one side or the other it sounds like the trim tab is either gone or needs to be adjusted.

I believe thier are 2 causes but I am not sure the bottom wing of the motor has a small bend in it like it was hit and the trim tab seems a little off center I will try to adjust it and see if it makes it better. I also had another question about a transon in a early question how can I tell if the transom will last other than trying to rock the engine off of it.
