Hi All,
I have a 13' SS. If I want to swim off of it in New England, am I required by law to have a ladder? I have checked the documentation from Ct's boating course and it does not make mention of a ladder. Clue's?

Nope! Personal preference. I never used one in my 13 or 15.

I use a 3 step ladder with my 13' Sport. I think it really makes getting back in the boat easier.

Bob, could you elaborate on your ladder; kind, location, deployment? Many thanks,
Hugh

I have a one month old 13 Sport and my dealer recommended using the cavitation plate to climb aboard. He did caution that the motor should be off!

The lake water and air temperatures are quickly approaching those suitable for swimming off the boat and perhaps tubing so I am very interested in the ladder issue.

I bought my ladder at Defender. It is a DOTLINE model PL3A, 3 step with 7 inch hooks. I remounted the middle step 2 inches higher so it hits the hull at a good spot when I hang it over the side. The ladder folds flat when not in use and takes up very little space.

Because of the great lateral stability of the Whaler hull, it is possible to re-enter the boat from the water by going over the gunwales. On most 13-foot boats you would probably capsize them if you tried that.

Depending on your age and physical condition, you might not be able to get back in the boat from deep water without a ladder or using the cavitation plate.
