Greetings,

I'm looking at a used '79 Whaler 20' Outrage. The boat was sitting in a boat yard here in CT and I just happened to notice that it wasn't registered for the 2001 boating season. I hunted down the owners name and lo and behold he said that he might be interested in selling it. The motor is a Johnson 150HP, probably mid 80's and it has a 15hp kicker.
Other than having the motor fully inspected, I am somewhat worried about older Whaler hulls and whether or not they are water logged. I was wondering how this can be looked into? Any advice would be of help. Looking at the hull from what area I can see, I didn't see any weeping of water from anywhere.
Also, I thought I read once that a Whaler sitting on a trailer should be supported by the center keel almost exclusively. (most of the pressure). This boat is only sitting on 4 carpeted bunks, 2 to each side of the keel. Can this cause damage?
Oh yea, one more thing, the guy said, when pressed for a price, that he would probably list the boat for $12K (w/trailer) once it was cleaned up and the motor was tested and tuned up. I imagine that he would sell it for a few thousand less as is, especially since he hasn't used it for 1 solid year. ( He admitted he was too busy this year.)

Thanks guys for your help.

PS. I blame Larry Sherman for my new interest in an older Whaler. <VBG>

John,

According to some, the pre 1985 20' Outrages had some ride quality issues when equipped with OMC outboards. If I understand it correctly, the deadrise of the Vee may be flatter on the pre '85 hulls. You need to do some searching in the forum here because this topic has been discussed several times.
