I'm new to the forum and the info. on this site is unbelievable. Just bought a used 1981 15 classic. It has a 60 johnson. The 60 is the same year as the boat. It runs fine, but I'd feel a lot safer with a kicker. What's a good size (hp) for a boat like like mine? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Another thing, on the average (assumng it is periodically maintained) how long to motors last? Aloha!

Ic,

Look under the 15 section. I hear a kicker bracket is difficult to install due to shape of transom. I went in with dad on a '81 15ft this past summer. If it is one of the 3 cylinder OMC's you can't wear them out!

That 2cyl 60 is a great motor. ANY engine can last 10 more yaers or 10 more minutes whether it is a 1995 or a 1955. Do a comp test, check the lower unit oil and make sure the carbs are clean. If it generates any idles problems have carbs checked because that is #1 reason for failure(running too lean). Also do a decarbonization on it.

Where will you use the boat? Will you fish? I use a trolling motor on my 13' sport for a kicker. You could get by with a small 3HP 2stroke gas to propel a boat that small. Regards, Jay
