I was watching the news on TV over the weekend and noticed on one segment concerning the "Detainees" at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, that they showed what appeared to be a 22 or 25 foot Outrage or Dauntless patroling the bay. I have a copy of Jane's Fighting Ships with photos of Whalers in use by various countries including the US Navy and the US Coast Guard. Based on Jane's, 29 countries are known to have Boston Whalers in their navies or coastguard. Boat lengths vary from 22-27 feet. Models include Outrage, Revenge, Dauntless and Offshore. Select boats are for search and rescue; others are dressed to kill. Weaponry includes 7.62 and 12.7 mm machine guns, 40 mm grade launchers and 12 barreled 107 mm multiple rocket launchers (Iran only). Most are circa 1990's. A few are older. Power plants include single and dual outboards ranging from 200 to 600 HP. All the standard motor manufacturers are represented.

Mario graciously sent me some digital images from these Jane's photos, but I have declined to reprint them due to considerations of copyright.I also have received several other images from contributors who saw photographs in newspapers and magazines, but again I have not reprinted them. Thanks to all for sending them. If anyone has any photos without copyright restriction of these fighting Whalers I would be very pleased to include them in CETACEA. --jimh |

jim - any thought to email Janes, explain what the site is, ask if they'd consider a request to post with proper copyright? Worst case is they say no, best case they might say yes. Don

The armed Coast Guard Whalers you all have been seeing since Sept 11th are Classic 25 Guardian/Raiders, set up with one bow mounted 50 cal. and two side mounted 7.63 cal weapons. A Whaler exec told me that this order came into CPD in 1998, and for 60 of these boats. That had to be a nice order for Whaler! Previously the Coast Guard had bought these Raiders in the 22' version, where they were used in the Persion Gulf in '91, but this time they stepped up to the 25.The whole rig, on it's trailer, is designed to go aboard a transport plane, for use anywhere in the world. I think the engines are twin 225 Merc EFI's, but not sure. It is interesting to see that even in 1997, the CG went for a hull designed in 1980, passing up the 25's successor recreational boats, the 24 and 26 Outrages. Or as someone here as previously said about Classic owners, does the Coast Guard also need to face up to the times, and get modern, newer hull technology and quit living in the past? |

It's cause the Coasties can't sip their colas and beers on the job--they don't need the new products drink holders. |

Good point, DC. They probably didn't need the drop-in cocktail/lunch tables either. |
