North beach,My experience with the older Whalers is limited to a 16' katama(fished in the Mud hole, Shrewsbury Rocks, etc.) There are much more knowledgeable people than me on this forum but In general '96 model year marks the end of the classic tri-hull and the change to a deep-v hull for the OR's. The 1996 17'OR is a great boat. From our point of view the best 17' boat we have ever been on. This statement is based on 11 years of marina ownership and 30+ years of boating. We used ours about 45 days last year in and around MV. We have taken trips from LBI to AC and used in Fingers lakes of NY. Uses include water skiing, fishing both conventional and Fly.
Highlights of '96 17' OR include:
Self bailing to the point of no plugs needed.
Large below deck storage in rear.
Bow storage. Console storage.
56 gallon built in fuel tank.
Stern seats.
A much more comfortable ride than older whalers.
Good freeboard and wide gunwales
12 rod holders.
