The local boat show in its 35th year, was no great shakes. The Whalers on display were virtually nothing but the big ones. They did have a 13 and a 18 Dauntlas, but otherwise it looked like it was offshore stuff only. In the offshore vein, I've got to admit, the HydraSports looked like the boat to buy. Comparing the 25 & 29 CC and Walkarounds to the comparable Whalers was scary. I'd have to say, the Hydras might be a better boat. Regardless, it hurts to even contemplate.
One thing I did notice with the Whalers on display, was the workmanship. They may be looking more and more like SeaRays, but they are well-made boats.
Overall, I'd say the show reflected an overall blah, that may just be the culmination of a bad year of business for these folks. When the only thing I walked away with was a deal on two light tackle offshore rods, I know I was let down.
Let's hope for a great 2002.
