Hi - I'm new to the site, and I'm looking to get my first Whaler (probably new, but used if I can find a clean rig). I do about half my boating in and around the mouth of the Connecticut River, and the other half in the area of the Race (including Fishers Island, and occasional trips to Montauk on a really nice day). I want the fishability of a center console, but I need something that's family-friendly, as I'll be out there sunbathing with my wife and her sisters occasionally (probably more often, as I expect to be more "popular" when I get the new boat). I like the 22 Dauntless and the 21 Outrage. The Dauntless has lots of room for adults to lounge around, which I really like. But, is it too much of a "bay boat" for the waters I'll be in? Do I need the deeper-vee of the Outrage? For the record, I usually only go out on nice days. If the wind is blowing 15+mph, I stay by the pool, and leave the boating to those with larger vessels. Look forward to your input.

I should mention that ALL of my boating is done inshore, near the CT/RI border. Never offshore. I use my boat primarily for fishing, which normally consists of drifting along the south side of Fishers Island, sun comes up, I'll go to deeper water to drift for fluke (if I'm hungry) or troll umbrella rigs for bass and blues (if I'm not hungry). Very occasionally, I'll go over to Montauk to see what's happening there. Occasionally, I'll have a couple of women/little kids aboard, and I stay in the Connecticut River. We'll sunbathe, eat lunch, and maybe do a little skiing or tubing. I'm deciding between the 22 Dauntless and 21 Outrage. I have a slight preference for the hull layout of the Dauntless, but some folks tell me I'd be much better off with the Outrage. I figured this was the place to find out. |

Jamie,I have a 21' 93 Outrage. I spend a month in the Mystic area each summer fishing Race Rock and Fishers Isalnd area and pulling my kids in tubes and on skis. The rest of the time I am in RI fishing Block Island. I think you will be more comfortable with the Outrage. It is better suited for the sound. Even on "calm" days, there are standing waves in the race. The outrage will be more stable for fishing and have a better ride. Just my opinion... |

Jamie M, either boat will be fine. The Dauntless will probably be less expensive lighter and need less HP. Both are great boats. I like your name ( it's the name of my son ). Regards, Jay P.S. Welcome aboard! |

Thanks guys. That's 1 vote for Outrage, and 1 vote for either. I'm kind of struggling with this decision. But if you have to struggle over a decision, there are definitely worse decisions to struggle over.Jamie |

The 22-Dauntless has a tiny hidden porta-potti in the console that affords the more slender, agile boater a modicum of privacy at the toilet. The 21-Outrage does not have such an enclosed space. If you plan to be on the water for several hours with a crew of women, this difference could be crucial to your enjoyment of the boat. |

Actually, the recently discontinued 21 Outrage does have a porta-potti in the console (which I believe is the same console used on the 23 Outrage)...the new 210 Outrage does not have an enclosed head compartment. As far as the comparison with a Dauntless 22...there really isn't one...the 21 Outrage (either one) is a LOT more boat than the Dauntless. I don't know the pricing on a new 22 Dauntless, but I believe that it is around $40K...for that kind of money here are a large number of used 21 Outrages on the various online boat listings...most in the low 30's to 40K range. We looked at a new 210 Outrage that was priced at around 40K with a 200 Optimax. This is pretty much a no-brainer in my opinion...Outrage wins hands down! Tom |
