Took yesterday off, got up early and took my father in law fishing. We were on the water at 6am. Man it was cold here in central Mass at 34 degrees and windy. The water temp on the lake was 47 degrees. Merc 90 4S didn't want to turn over. Had plenty of cranking power and was getting gas? After about 20 minutes of trying she finially fired up and ran fine for the rest of the day after warm up. Funny because a week earlier I had tried to start the motor in the driveway and again on a cold morning she didn't want to fire off? Next day in the afternoon (warmer) she fired right up and ran smooth.

Anyone else experience hard starting with a 4S in cold weather? Manual says not to choke or advance the throttle as there is a fuel enrichment system. Is there something that maybe needs adj?

Anyhow only other excitement was when my father in law caught the prop :>. I did catch a nice trout!

I also launched yesterday for the first time this season...my Merc 4S 60 started immediately in the 48 degree lake water in Vermont. I never give it any throttle when starting cold. Funny thing is that when I start it warm I need to advance the throttle a bit. The opposite of what I'd think.

Jeff,
That is the opposite of what I am seeing. Once warmed up, or in warmer weather my Merc 90 4S fires right up. Is your Merc 60 4S EFI? My 90 isn't. Maybe on cold days I need to advance the throttle just once to get some fuel into the engine before I try to start it. Then return to neutral & try to crank her over? Anyone have any tips for cold weather starting a 4S?

By any chance do you have a family member by the name of Harvey Childress who was a Drill Sgt in the Army around 1972?????????

Thanks,

I have over 200 hours on my Merc 90 4S and I have never had to even prime the bulb. Granted here in the San Francisco Bay Area the weather never really gets too cold, but i've had it sit a couple months in the winterand started it with a quick turn of the key. The auto fuel enrichment may not be working. The only problem I had was the motor would sometimes die after coming off of fast idle. The idle would drop to such a low RPM that it would die of die immediatelt when shifted into gear. Tried revving it up in neutral, but idle would still be the same. Still occurs once in a while. Have your motor checked out by a dealer

Hey Fred. Nope no one named Harvey Childress that I'm aware of? But, you never know. There could be a lot of Childresses in the woodpile :>

Fishniff thanks for the tip. I'll give my dealer a call today. I have to call em anyhow to have them put in the main circuit breaker that Whaler forgot to install on my Montauk. They won't let me do it. It's a safety item and Whaler insists the dealer do it.

My 4S is carbed also. Funny they should exhibit opposite behaviors. Mine is absolutely consistent and reliable, however.

Talked to Merc yesterday and they seem to think its the fuel even though I used gas stabilizer last fall. They recommended I use some Merc detergent additive they have come out with and get some new fuel.

Tried to start her up in the driveway today. Same problem, didn't want to keep running or kick over at idle. I advanced the throttle slightly and tried again. Then she fired right up. But even after running for several minutes at approx 1K RPM when I backed the throttle to idle she ran real rough. At Idle am at approx. 750 RPM. What RPM's are you guy's with 4 strokes idleing at?
Thanks,
Barnett
