I have an 16'7" "1973" model blue interrior Whaler that was originally purchased as a bare hull. The capacity plate has rusted away and I would like to obtain or make a replacement. BW informed me that a replacement was not available and could not find a similar capacity plate drawing in their archives. As I cannot read all of the information on the plate I have, I would appriciate if anyone with a similar model could fill in the question marks for me.

I also need a capacity plate for a 1976 13' sport. I think that you must have one to be legal (at least in California). What is one to do?

Ger - If you can provide any information I would appriciate it. Otherwise I'm going to take a guess at the missing data.

whalernut - My 16'7" is, according to the serial number a 1971 model (must have been a left over). It was sold as a bare hull so the capactiy plate may be different that a factory completed boat. Is any info ledgible on your capacity plate?
If I can get this figured out I could see how much it would cost to have more than one made provided they are similar or the same capacity plate.

dburton-
I am also under the impression that you need a capacity plate to be leagle. If you contact Whaler through their websit tell them you are in need of a capacity plate for your model and Serial number boat. Ask for the p/n if it is still avaliable so your local dealer can order it for you or ask them to provide a drawing so you can have one made. If you have to have one made a sign company or a trophy company should be able to have it made for you however it could be costly.

I emailed Whaler because I need a plate also. The sun has faded the numbers on my 84 Montauk plate. You can't just order one, you need to bring the boat to a dealer so that they can verify that you're not trying to put a Montauk plate on a 13 footer. Or so they said...I just love making a 200 mile round trip just to verify my Montauk is a Montauk.

Somewhere sometime I'd like to deal with a company that isn't run by their legal department.

Max 10 persons or 2400lbs total person + motor + gear.
Max Hp = 100

I recently purchased a 16'7" BW and am in the process of refurb. The Capacity plate on my hull is aluminum and the black lettering is coming off. However, it looks like I have the same type plate as your boat has. One of the first things I did was to try and figure out what it said and came up similar partial results as you. I wrote it down for safe keeping. Fortunately, I was able to complete some of my plate wording with your post (thanks). And, my plate had some of your missing data.

"[OR] PROPERLY LOCATED MAX. WEIGHT OF"

Note that the text "100", "10", "OR" and "2400" each reside within a stamped box outline on my plate (I assume to emphasize the values).

Unfortunately, for the last line, I can only supply one word (IF) for you...

"IF ???? IS EXCEEDED"

Maybe the other missing word is "LIMIT"? I may take another close look tonight and see if I can make out that last word.

By the way, the title for my BW says it's a 73 model, however using the Hull ID number, it looks like I too have a 71 hull.

The interesting thing about my blue hull 69 is that back then, BW didn't use capacity plates. They used capacity stickers. The sticker must have been used on all of the boat because it has the 13' data on it as well.

Thank you for your help we do indeed have the same capacity plate. The missing info from your last line is

"IF 100 HP IS EXCEEDED"

I'm not sure if it was "HP" or "H.P."

My plate had been painted over and last night I took some paint remover to the remaining paint chips. I was hesitant to do this before as I thought it may etch the aluminum and all the remaining info would be lost.

The completed text from the capacity plate is below. As BobS indicated "100", "10","OR", and "2400" are contained in boxes.

BOSTON WHALER INC. ROCKLAND MASS.
16'7" MODEL (WHALER LOGO)
THIS BOAT IS BUILT TO ACCOMODATE UNDER NORMAL

IF 100 HP IS EXCEEDED

I would like to thank all those who posted and helped me peace together the missing info. I will have a completed drawing in the near future if anyone needs it.

On the VERY early Whalers, the plate was a decal with the info attached to the inside of the transom. When I got my "new" 65 bear hull in 2000, it had been painted over so I got hte dealer to order a new plate for me and I atteched it to the Starboard side betwen where the bow rail and side rail come near each other.I think it was about $10 or so and it only took a couple of weeks to get it. Whaler dealers are pretty good folks and will generally help you out with something like this, or at least the ones I have delt with will.)

Try to ask a Marine Max dealer about Boston Whalers, they are some dumb salesman there, but hey what do you want to know about this Sea Ray right over here??? Ask one of those slick haired salesman for a new capacity B/W plate and I would love to see the looks on their faces!! Jack.
