So folks help me here: If I have a hull with the serial number of 328xx stenciled on the upper transom inside the motor well just to starboard; Then I go to the reference area of 16-17 foot hulls and find that it fits in the series of numbers denoting the 1964 model year. They made a modest number of hulls that year, right. Thanks for help. Tom

Look further on this site and you will find that the stencil inside the transom is not the serial number. The serial number, depending on age is either stamped in the hull or on a metal plate on the outside of the transom. Serial number should start BWC XXXXXX.

I'm always curious when I see someone post these questions as to serial numbers as to what does it say on your boat title or registration? The serial number should be on your title and/or registration.

jstachowiak,

Actually you have that backwards. The stenciled number IS the serial number. The other number is the HIN, or Hull Identification Number. HIN's only came into existence in 1972. Tom L.'s boat does not have one, only the serial number.

Tom L.,

I think you answered your own question. For more information on your boat you can send the serial number to Boston Whaler and they will look it up in their records and see what model it was when new and when it left as well as where it was shipped to. You need the complete number to be able to do this.

When did Whaler stop using wood for the pilot seat bow locker etc in the Montauk?

By the early 1990's the Montauk was available with either teak or all plastic, your choice. I'm not sure when the last teak clad Monatuk was produced, probably c. 1996
