Last night I'm watching The Learning Channel (TLC) on cable about the science of ballistics and development of weaponry. The last item on the show is an interview on the forward deck of a US Navy Destroyer, with an automated 5" gun in the background. The Navy officer explaining this new high-tech weapon says: "This 5" gun can pick off, with a direct hit, a small craft like a BOSTON WHALER, traveling in excess of 40 knots, and doing evasive manuevers, at a distance of TEN nautical miles!" The poor guy in the Whaler would never know what hit him! I wonder if the old, retired 22 Guardians are being used for target practice! I thought it was curious that he used the name "Boston Whaler" rather than "Cigarette Boat or jet ski"!

In reference to military hardware, Boston Whaler has released their "stealth" unmannned spy/assualt craft. It is very similar in function to the unmanned planes the CIA uses over battle fields (e.g. Predator). The craft uses oblique surfaces and a quiet jet drive to monitor activity. There's one picture on the BW site somewhere in the investor section.

You think it might be because it would take a 5" gun to sink it?

I guess I don't know my guns. I fugured a 5 inch would leave nothing behind to float! :c)

I'm a bit skeptical of this claim. The Navy's newest 5 inch gun (the Mark 45 mod 4) has a muzzle velocity of 2780 feet per second. This implies a flight time of at least twenty seconds (it would actually be more due to the indirect path of the shell and atmospheric drag). This seems like more than enough time for an evading small boat to change course and avoid a direct hit.

Did BW make any boat for the navy in the 60s or early 70s for Veitnam use?

I had one in South Viet Nam in the Delta on the Mekong River. It was olive drab in color and had a deck that would move up and down with heavy wave action. (It was not a boat friendly enviornment.)
When I left the Advisory Team (MACV Team 68) in 1972 it was still floating and still in use. A great boat.
The hard use it had,the amount of people it would carry and the hits it took convinced me that one day I would own one. I've got a 89 Montock.
