OK, I was over at the local whaler dealer talking about my twin motors and...

The topic came up that the prevoius owner had disabled the "auto mix" and ran the motors with the oil in the fuel...

The whaler tech guy then chimed in that many people do that but "that means you can't leave the boat with fuel in her..."

So is this true? How long is too long?

Pete

Your milage will vary.

I always stabilize the remaining fuel at the end of the season and use the left over in the snow blower. What ever is left, I will use up after about 2 gal of new fuel are burned up after de-winterization (but, I have a 1982 Johnson 35).

No problems encountered to date.

I do, however, squirt some GumOut in the carb for de-winterization to help the motor get running. My thinking is that with a lot of fogging oil in the engine, a little ether to help it get started won't hurt.

Forgot to quantify the time. This last year I put the boat down in Mid-October and brought it back up in mid-July.

I read your questions as:

"Is it true that gasoline mixed with TCW-III oil has a shorter shelf life than straight gasoline?"

I'd like to hear the answer to that myself.

No.

Gasoline is gasoline. Northern fuels with oxygen in it will lose it's octane faster than standard fuels. Modern fuels evaporate faster than fuels from yesteryear. So when a carb has pre-mix in it and it evaporates, the oil remains. In most cases if carbs were run dry and sta-bil is used the only thing is the octane will be lower come spring. Just fill-up with super and you will be fine, I'd say up to a year or so. Longer if in a cooler climate that is more constant like a garage.
