Am I correct in thinking that these are two different models. The offshore was a raised bridge deck and a smaller cabin trunk?

Which model is generally regarded as better?

Among the almost 500 images in the CETACEA section are several of 27-foot Whalers.

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/cetacea/cetaceaPage39.html shows a 27-Offshore.

I don't think we have a 27-Full Cabin, but the boat would be more like the 27-Walk Around shown in http://continuouswave.com/whaler/cetacea/cetaceaPage29.html .

These are quite different style boats, so it is hard to say which one is "better." That would depend upon what your intended use would be.

I'm no expert, but isn't the tow boat identified as a 27 offshore actually a 27 center console cuddy?

It seems like there are at least three distinct variants: the "walk-arounds" pictured on page 29, the "center console cuddy" pictured on page 39, and finally the "full cabins".

Also seems that the full cabin has smaller side decks.

My question was directed more towards general sea-keeping abilities (especially head seas) among the various models.

I am familiar with Whaler in general, having owned a classic 13 (around 1967 or so vintage) and a 1998 Conquest 23 (my current boat).

I am pondering restoring a 27 and repowering with new 225 4 strokes (Honda or Yamaha). I can also dry store the boat on a trailer at the launch ramp I use right now, so 27 with a 10 foot beam is attractive (wide on the water, but still can be moved on a trailer in a pinch, plus I can dry store in the winter).

Thanks in advance for any comments.

joeag,

No, the tow boat on Cetacea page 39 is, as jimh points out, a 27-Offshore which was introduced in 1990 or 1991.

A 27 Center Console Cuddy is totally different. You can see one here on Cetacea page 4: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/cetacea/cetaceaPage04.html

In the late 1980's there were three 27’ models: the 27 Center Console Cuddy, the 27 and the 27 Full Cabin. The latter two were very similar in outward appearance but the Full Cabin had the bridge raised maybe 10" or 12". They were both cuddys but the full cabin had a galley and a few more options.

Also the Full Cabin model was not available as a simple notched transom for outboards while the 27 was. The net difference in weight between the 27 and the Full Cabin 27 was 300 lbs.

By 1990 there was also a new Walk Around 27 in addition to aforementioned Offshore model. The 27 Walk Around can be seen on Cetacea page 29: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/cetacea/cetaceaPage29.html
