I have a 1989 15.5 Ft. SuperSport with a 1989 70 HP Mercury engine. Mills factory top. Factory cushions and orig tilt Highlander Trailer. It has only been in fresh water with no bottom paint. It is a great boat and has always been garaged and is in perfect shape. I am in the Boston area and am considering getting a bigger Whaler. Any idea on value?

ws, I would think in perfect shape $6500-$8500. The motor being a 1989 the # of hours and condition is the issue on the value. Also, living in Boston the value should be on the high side, however no salt water use might be a hard sell. Regards, Jay

Thankyou for the info. The not used in salt water may be a tough sell but the boat is stored and used only in one of the cleanist lakes in New Hampshire. I really hate to sell it but really need something bigger. I have used it probally on average 4 or 5 times a year. I am in the market for a new boat and boy do newer Whalers cost some $.

I bought my 15 the first week of April here in San Diego for 3,800. It is pretty decent shape being an 81, everyone I met have thought that I got a deal. Whalers tend to be a bit more out here it seems and the 15 is hard to come by. Looking back, I gave mysefl up to 6,000 to spend on a 15, that is just one buyers budget though.
As for it being used only 4 or 5 times a years, wheew, geez, if mine isnt in the water minimum of twice a month, I have to take a sick day just to get it wet :)
Overall not sure how it is in the northeast but in so cal, you would be able to sell that thing in about a day. (It took me two years and a number of near misses to finally purchase mine.)

Here in my area I check the main want ads each week along with the big local Boston Whaler Dealer. I have never even seen one of these 15.3 Supersports for sale. Me and my wife are only boaters when condition are right. Temp over 85 no wind a perfect day. Thats why so little use. I now have twins that are 2 so time for something a little bigger. If I cannot get a good price for it I just might keep it and get another boat also. I am sure that it will not loose any more value.

I would say $6-7k.

For that I would just keep it. Maybe buy a bigger one and use this one just for fishing. Did you check out the pictures?

ws, here is a good article you may want to read. It explains the situation about the value of the boat, motor etc.. http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/buying.html

With all respect, how much do you want for a boat with a near 15 year old motor? New 13 ft is @ 8500.00, sure 2 feet smaller but all brand new, I personally wouldnt go over 5k on a 15 ft cause any thing more than that and I could grab a Mountauk . Tried to look at the pics but cant find that damn wavy symbol! I have one next to the #1 but it puts it up on top, not down the middle!

That was being generous. I have a beautiful 13' I can't get $3k for.

JFM--Read the thread you posted about boat value and it confirms my supsicions. I've been looking at used Montauks and comparing to price of new 170. It seem to me that the price of most used Montauks is high relative to "replacement" cost. Seems like the market has not adjusted to these new economics yet. I've noticed a similar pattern with 15s as well. But this does not seem to be the case with 13s (see also bigshot's comment). The sport 130 has been out longer than the 170 and 150 (just out), and it appears that used market pricing has begun to reflect the availability of a new "replacement" substitute. I imagine that the only way that these used prices would hold up over time is if the 170 and 150 prove to be lesser boats than the classic 17s and 15s. I've been having a hard time getting to the bottom of that issue. Is the 170 inferior, equal to, or superior to the classic 17 Montauk in certain respects?...overall? Not withstanding the concern of being underpowered (which is a big one), it seems that 170 owners posting here are very happy with the boat, but I cannot tell if they prefer it over the classic 17 or even if they were very familiar with the classics at all.

Thunderbay,
Try to copy and paste the link. I know that the value is somewhat based on the newer models but they are not making anymore 15 Supersports. Oh sure you can find something close. I can also bet that if you found one it would not be in the condition this one is. All that being said maybe I should just keep it.

wspellenbe - I looked at the pictures, and the boat does appear to be in great condition, I can see why you want to keep it.

Here is a 'comp' data point - there is a 1988 15' SS for sale here in the Seattle area that started at $9500 at least a month ago, and is now down to $7500, and apparently still available. I would guess the condition is pretty good based on the opening price. I recall looking at the ad and thinking 'they're deaming'.

From my point of view, the availablility of late 1980's Montauks around $8-9k tend to hold the prices of the 15's down to $6-7k.

wspellenbe -

Where did you get those cushions? I'm looking for something similar. Thanks!

Ah - I did not read carefully. They are factory.

How much was this rig new? I recall in 1986 I was quoted a price of around $7,500 with a johnson 70. I can't imagine the price was more than $ 3,500 higher three years later in 1989.
I think $7,000 13 years later isn,t too bad. Your boat is in great shape but keep in mind the motor is 13 years old and a replacement will cost over $5,000.

Yet another reason to keep it.

ws, what do you want for your boat? Put it in your local paper and ask what you want. You may have better luck this way. I always sell things this way. You get a feel for the market, and you may get a potential buyer. It's better to have them there in person to SELL your boat.
Also the new 150 15' is 14,500 to 16,000, very close to the new Montauk. However size does matter. Look on boat trader or elsewhere, the only 15's you see are Rage's and Daunless, need I say more. Regards, Jay

I remember buying my used Sport 15 and then seeing the SuperSport like yours at the local Whaler dealer. I'm no expert, but I think everyone's right on as far as value. The good news is that it won't go down much if at all, except for how the outboard depreciates.

Mostly what I wanted to say was Nice Boat!

Yes it is a great boat. Not only that I never see one on my lake or others and people want to see it belive it or not. Really no one selling any in the local rags either. This was made in the Rockland factory and as a avid reader of this site Whaler is not the same as the old days. Seems like people like to compare to a 13ft and let me tell you there is no comparsion. The next time it is in the water I will post some other pictures. I would pass the factory sign on Rt128 on the way to Cape Cod as a kid. After all the sales of the company it is not the same.

not sure if this applys to 15ss, but after just buying a 86 montauk, after looking for months, i've realized that a 15 year old classic hull in mint conditon is worth only a few thousand less, then a brand new hull. It's the engine that makes all the difffernce, people put brand new engines on their boat and cant sell it because someone like myself would then rather buy new.
