I gotta vent! This afternoon I pulled up to my local ramp to off load my son and pull the "new girl" outta the drink. The ramp is probably near 25 ft wide with dockage on both sides.Theres a guy on the left with his boat nearly on the trailer, so I go to the right.I tie off the bow and stern, put my kid out of the way and go get the trailer. No sooner then me flippin a UB tocome around the parking lot, this guy with a PWC slams his trailer down between my boat and the guy on the left.He backed so far down the ramp I swore he'd be pulling sea weed outta his tail gate.To make that rude act even more obnoxious he tries to shoot the needle and land this thing on the trailer and winds up hitting my boat.I freaked! He comes up to me and says " I nicked your boat". Well, I was hoping he did "nick" my boat so I could teach him some leason he would remember the next time he came to my town to act like an idiot. I could not find any trace of anything that even resembled a nick and this guy bounced pretty hard off my portside.I couldnt even be mad at that.I calmed down quick and sent the guy on his way......with a warning of course. Im very protective of my "new girl". This one is gonna be with me for a long time. StevePS Thanks for allowing this vent, my wife didnt understand..........yet

You gotta calm down and don't act like a jerk because that guy is a jerk! And life is full of jerks. Let them be jerks and sooner or later they will get theirs. And the weekend brings them all out!Just be thankfull it was only a non-damage bump.At least he aknowledged he hit your "new girl"!And remmember, your "new girl" is not a person, replacable and repairable! You'll never know how crazy the next "jerk" will be! Thank God I have a slip!...Happy boating! |

That sounds like a nightmare. What you should have done is call the marine police, local law enforcement and have the incident/accident documented. This jerk may have a history of jerkness.. Here in Maryland they would have slammed that fool with stiff fines, regardless of damage.... |

Jay A, Don't feel too safe inside your slip. I have seen a poor boat operator run into another boat while it was "safe and sound" in it's own slip. I guess anything can happen.Stephen, I'm glad you did not suffer any damage. Regards, Joe |

Another jerk on a PWC? Geez, I wonder why these poor guys get singled out by 'the authorities?' They're just out enjoying the god given right to be jerks!Good think there weren't any orphans or nuns out swimming nearby! |

Shoobie's are tourists. The name comes from someone who wears shoes to the beach, etc. |

Ive seen it work the other way too, where damn pwc were blocking both sides of the ramp and a boater whom knows his stuff would load up right between them, making them look stupid, but that isnt the same as hitting your boat. Cant say what I would have done, cant hit him or you would be in jail, no damage, so no claim, oh heck, punch his truck and call it even! |

It's sorta a south Jersey term.As you get further north they become bennies. Same derogatory connotation though, and the same degree of idiocy. And it seems every darn one of them has a PWC. Good thing they don't like to go too far outside the inlet. |

Bigshot: I liked your explanation of the term - first time I had heard that one. As we were growing up in Philly, the term "Shoobie" was used just a little differently. It had a negative, kind of snobby connotation. Shoobie's were people that came to the beach - from somewhere else - for a single day. As a result, they were said to have brought their lunch to the beach with them in a shoe box - hence the shoobie. |

I forget what the correct definition of Bennie is. But they are synonomous. Basically the guy with the brown socks, camera around neck, goofy hat and hiwaiin shirt. Wife wears a moomoo and carries an umbrella & picnic basket. I grew up on the beach, if you rented, we hated you. If you daytripped, you were lucky to get out with your life:) |

PS they also had rafts......nobody used rafts but shoobies.....we all saw what happened to the kid on a raft in Jaws. You were local, you had alternative flotaion devices, usually something with a skeg and a leash. If not you body surfed. NOBODY uses rafts in the ocean. |

whalersman: You got that right! However my location is out of the way from boat traffic inside a protected cove. The only waves are caused by landing seagulls and swans. But many years ago I was tied up at the end of a gas float. This 50' to 55' cruiser from N.Y. named "Hope" came along side of my 13' Sport and "popped" the Whaler right out of the water! It deposited it on top of the float! And this all happened with over 150' of open dock space in front of my boat! He never did tie-up at the dock, just "popped" and run! About an hour later I saw him tied up at another gas dock in the inner harbor. |

And then, in this intermountain area and probably many others - we call them 'Tourons' - a cross between a tourist and a moron. Unquestionably - tourons are definitly inferior to another cross - the mule - which is smart, doesn't infringe on others, knows the difference between right and wrong - though can be a bit stubborn at times and has a mind of it's own! ---- Jerry/Idaho |

We have "crows"! After the book and movie titled "The Perfect Storm" came out,so did the tourists. It's rare to walk on any street in Gloucester,Ma and not have someone stop and ask:"Where's the Crow's Nest"? The bar that was a main focal point in the story. And if any "crow" is rude when asking,I always tell them: "Go down this street and take a left at the George Wallace statue"! |

Stephen, there are sea gods somewhere. Several years back I was trolling foe eyes 14 miles off Catawba Island in Lake Erie. Way out to get away dodos and fish in peace and quite. Here comes this idiot on a PWC and does a couple of circles around my Montauk screwing up the fishing. I later noticed him dead in the water screaming and waving wildly. I ignored him so he started to try and hand paddle towards me. I let him do that for a good half hour or so. Finally I was ready to go in so I motored over. He wanted a tow, and I obliged him. I called a marine towing service out of Port Clinton that had the nickname of the "old pirate" because of his excessive charges. I heard from my marina operator that it probably cost the B#@tard $150. I've towed many a stranded boater in on many bodies of water for years, but not a single PWC. If he hadn't been in the shipping lanes I wouldn't have even called "the pirate". |

Funny how everybody's got a name for somebody else: Yoopers (people from Michigan's Upper Peninsula) call people from downstate "Trolls" because they're from under "The" bridge (Mackinac). They call tourists "fudgies" because they eat so much Mackinac Island Fudge. People in Southwest Michigan call Chicagoan's FIPS...for ****ing Illinois People....which for me is bittersweet having grown up in Southwest Michigan and now living in Chi-town. (I resisted as long as I could...but I've officially become a FIP.) Wisconsinites are Cheese-heads, and to complete the great "lake Michigan circle tour," those from the UP of Michigan are Yoopers again. How do ya like dat, eh? |

Jay A, Now that I'm a transplant in DC, I remember Cape Ann with great memories. We used to give the "crow's" perfect directions to "the Nest". We'd see if they got out alive. The movie really didn't do that place justice. And the "popper" used to happen alot in Manchester harbor. It's amazing how many lines you can make with a black rub rail along side a big trawler or Hatteras. We were more cruel when we were in saiboats "learning" to sail. I miss those days.... CLW |

Choclab:Spending my summers as a kid in Sakonnet (the place not the Whaler)Rhode Island I have memories of learning to sail and being quite cruel to the people who had come up from Fall River or Providence for the day to fish from the end of the break water. As we came sailing in in out Lasers and 420's reaching across Naragansat Bay we would get going as fast as we could and come surfing in on a wave as close to the outside of the breakwall as possible and see how many lines we could snag on our dagger boards. One usuall heard the zip of the line being spooled off followed by several explatives. We were bad having fun at someone elses expense (who probably could not afford it). I hope my kids are more respectful than I was. |

Does the nest exist or not?Friend of mine, who was orginally from Aurora, Illinois tells of people constantly coming through Aurora looking for "Stan Mikita's Donut Shop" from Wayne's World. It does not exist, but often they directions they receive get them a long visit to Rockford. |

I think you have to be a Canadian to understand "Stan Mikita's Donut Shop" reference. In Canada the number two (after McD's) fast food outlet is Tim Horton's Donuts. Tim Horton used to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs. In making Wayne's world and recreating his suburban Canadian youth Mike Myers had to Americanize his cultural references. If memory serves Stan Mikita played for the Chicago Black Hawks. |

You got off pretty easy,my buddy was getting gas one day with his Parker he just got and this lady comes by to get gas and floors her boat right into his. He receives a foot long hole in the side of his boat. She was drunk but immediately called a state cop she knew, who showed up before the locals. Some wheeling and dealing later, she walks with no ticket but,has to pay for the repairs. Thing is, my buddy did his own detective work and finds out this lady has two priors on boats. P.S. a SHOOBIE is a tourist, old days daytrippers brought their lunches on the train in shoeboxes. |

Since some of you mentioned hockey, I alway's thought it would be funny to see Bobby Orr,Bobby Hull and Jim Dorey play with the Hartford Whalers! You can't have a dorey without a hull and oar! By the way, I believe Dorey did play for the New England Whalers when they played in Boston. |

Maybe it's just me but...How dare these people (Shoobies, Bennies, etc.) show us that they think that the place where we live is a nice place to visit. We'll teach them that they'd better think twice before spending their money on our local economy...What nerve they have! |

I like the shoebox theory. They used to have a railroad on LBI. I have heard both the Bayonne, edison, etc and the Ben franklin and from where I lived I would say Ben Franklin. We get tons of PA people because the idiots moved to a state with no shore and have to mooch off us:) Most don't mind the North Jersey and NY crowd but despise the Philthadelphians. Don't ask me, a tourist is a tourist and they all should be shot if they stay longer than a weekend. |

Lets face it, people on vacation go thru their week off with blinders on.Locals are just living their lives trying to avoid these people who seem to have little or no regard for others because "its their time in the sun!" They get shit faced and piss on peoples lawns, they steel bikes to ride home from the bars, they yell at the top of their lungs after "last call" in the streets at 3 a.m. and they drive their cars like their back in NYC.OK they spend money in our town but nothing is better then seeing them go! LBI in september is key, thats when the real party starts. Big Shot I'd like to by you a drink at the Hudson House if you're ever in town ....let me know. |
