With the legnth and drift of Arches' thread I thought I would start clean. Last weekend on southern Susquehanna River I was pulled over in my 18OR for standing while driving. I was given the full inspection, met all criteria, but was told it is illegal to stand to operate. I responded with "the boat is designed to be operated while standing". His reponse was 2/3 of body weight must be below the gunnel. He then stepped back and realised that the seats at the center console are above the gunnel height. He left me with a warning and said he was off tho research this, he never saw another Whaler like my set up.

This is really pretty funny. These on-the-water cops ought to be looking for enemy submarines instead of hounding Whaler owners.

Coincidently, I happened to see a terrible little cable TV program called "Pleasure Boating" that was all about the wonders of boating in the Pittsburgh pool area. It featured an interview with some public official who was the boating "czar" or some such title. You ought to get in contact with him and tell him that the maritime police are getting a bit over zealous in their pursuit of Truth, Justice, and the American way.

"2/3's of body weight must be below the gunnel"....I guess tug boats and any other large vessels with a pilot house are being operated by those who are breaking the law!

15' Owners in PA beware! There is NO way to get 2/3 of your weight or your height below the gunnel, unless you're LYING on floor! This sounds like a new terrorist tactic aimed at the personal watercraft. There's no way to get 2/3 of your weight below the gunnel of a PWC is there?

Incidentally, what do the ticket writers in PA boat in? Fully enclosed hard-top Life-Boats? In Florida 2/3 of the Ticket Writers are standing in their own Center Console boat!
