send more particulars please.
i'm on the verge of a t-top on a 22' outrage and the decision has been only if S/S or aluminum.
here in florida, a white fiberglass hardtop piece ( 5' x 7' ) is comparable price and endless utility over canvas.
love to listen here.

I suggest you seriously consider a hard T-Top. Canvas can fade and you will eventually have to replace it...

When looking at boats earlier this year, we observed a noticeable red tint/glow was cast inside a boat w/red canvas T-tops on sunny days. It was noticeable to the point we opted for blue canvas. In general, the color red seems to fade more than any other color, not sure this holds true for canvas but....

Dark green or light grey would look nice.

Don't consider S/S as a material for your T- Top or any structure that will experience stress and vibration. The metal is too rigid, causing stress fractures in time. Alum. will flex enough to hold up and is cheaper to manufacture.
I have had two S/S frames and both needed annual welding touch up because of stress fractures near the joints.
Comments about the red color fading are true for the older materials but my two year old Sunbrella top looks like new. Although a personal preference, the red tone is not relaxing to the eye's. I would suggest considering the new off white tones or other cooler colors.

Hello Jvisco,

I partially agree with Smallfrye. I agree that SS welds do crack from the stresses of boating, particularly in choppy waters. I have had select welds repaired on my SS radar arch a few times in the 14 years that I have owned my Whaler. However, I still prefer SS to aluminum if you’re planning on owning your boat for a long period. My radar arch is going on 14 years and it still looks great. I have had to replace the aluminum masthead light (mounted on the arch) three times and the aluminum and chrome rod holders twice. The next time I take my boat for weld repairs, I’m going to have them replace some of the shear plates at stress points with larger ones. I believe that this will stop, or at least minimize, the cracking. I’m also going to have them install a SS backer plate under the gunwale where the radar arch base plate is anchored. This should reduce swaying of the arch in choppy seas. I hope the stresses are not going to be transferred to the gunwale too much.

Not to count aluminum out completely, perhaps the newer aluminum finishes (paint and anodizing coatings) are better these days. I do know that in the constriction industry they manufacture a heavy-duty marine grade anodizing material.

As for fabric materials, my Mill’s canvas bimini top last nearly 12 years before the threads of the seams rotted away. The canvas was still OK. Over 14 years the royal blue canvas faded only a little. I have since installed a new navy blue “Sunbrella” top. I hope I did not make a mistake by not going with Mill's again. I had considered an off-white color, but the installers indicated that light colors tend to look soiled over time and show rust stains from SS hardware. However, white does hide seagull droppings.

Regards,

Mario
