Does anyone know the hp/weight limits of the whalerdrive? (Specifically for a 25') I'm considering on repowering with 4 strokes and know they are heavier than 2 strokes. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

I believe the hp limit on a 25' with WD is 450. Unfortunately I don't know the weight limit and that will be the limiting factor. I would email Chuck Bennett at Whaler, cbennett@whaler.com.

Good luck!

I did e-mail Chuck bennett and he referred me to this site...My question was regarding 2 115hp four strokes and the weight limit of the whalerdrive. He stated,"The Whalerdrive should be able to handle most 115 four strokes(I'd recommend the mercury efi 115 as it weighs about 386lbs...Honda 115 would weigh about 100lbs more)"
Do you think he mentioned Merc because thats what they are putting on the new Whalers? I've owned a mercury, and 2 Johnsons, my personnal preference is Yamahas and Hondas. I'm still in the looking phaze and the 130hp Hondas have caught my eye but, 496lbs each.(115's also weigh 496lbs) I have alot of friends in the marine business and it seems you just can't go wrong with a Honda. For me it is a weight issue on the whalerdrive...

If I had a 25 WD I think I would ideally want twin 150's or 200's. I can't believe that twin 115's would be enough power for me with that boat. About the only 4-stroke that would work weight-wise would be the Suzuki 140 at only 410 lbs. That's less than a Mercury SW EFI 150 (or 200) at 416. However, I only have experience with Mercs.

You will find lots of topics discussing repower and Suzuki in the Performance forum.

The rescue boat I run is an 22 Outrage Cuddy with WD. You can see pictures of it in the current Cetacea page.

This boat has the twin 115 Merc 4 strokes on it. A few thoughts based on experience.

1) The 115 Merc is not available with Counter Roataion. This is something I would want for my boat.

2) The top speed on the boat with full gear, fuel and a crew of 3 is 33 mph.

Based on this I think that this would be a wrong choice for your 25.

marlee809, that's decent performance. Of course the Yam 115 2-stroke is a light weight at only 358 lbs. Do you have a WhalerDrive?
