I'm trying to decide where and how I should mount a VHF radio on/in the console of the my new 170 Montauk and hoping to get some feedback on what others have done and are they happy with their configuration.

- I've already decide to mount my FF on the right hand side of top of console.
- My hand handheld Garmin GPS will be on a Ram suction mount, probably near the compass.
- I'll be using a 3-4' VHF whip mounted on the right top of my console hand rail. I really don't have plans to go in big water; mostly back bays and possible near some inlets.

So where do I put this radio and do I use a surface mount or should I install right into the console ?

Thanks in advance,
AnthonyT

Mount it on top and tip it up so you can
see it while standing up.

Keep the speaker as far as possible from
the compass. If you are right-handed, mount
it on the right side of the top, and the mike
on right side of the console.

I haven't realy looked at the new console but I flush mounted mine into the console on my 99. Gets it out of the way.
I'll send you a couple pictures.

Flush mounted mine in the console behind the drink holders. Combination Garmin GPS/FF mounted on top and angled towards me. 3' SS VHF antenna mounted in a similar position to what you described.

Thanks to all.... I like the idea of flush mounting it behind the cup holders. Just one question, this will be out of the way of the throttle, right ? It also minimizes the length of coax cable to antenna...

Thanks again,

AnthonyT -
You can see where i mounted mine in the Photos of boat Cetaeca Page 58. Found it better to mount the stereo behind the cup holders and the VHF below the controls on the starboard side.
