I spent yesterday cleaning up a major gas leak in my boat and yard. Seems that I neglected to pay enough attention to the screws that hold the console to the deck. They evidently rubbed against the plastic Tempo 13 gal tanks and punctured one of them. It was full! Big Mess ! What have others done to correct/prevent this in your boats? My first idea is to dremmel the screws back to the nuts, but I still worry...
Ideas?
Thanks

Howdy CLW.

Because you indicate that your fuel tanks are under the console I guess that you have a wood console boat that someone has modified, because I recall no such screws in my Sakonnet.

Are the screws you speak of horizontal or vertical? Is the console skirt screwed into mahogany blocks which are in turn screwed to the deck? Has someone replaced the blocks with angled metal?

What do you think, Tom Clark?

The screws are horizontal holding the console to the blocks that are screwed to the deck. I'm not sure if dremmeling is the total solution. Hate to have another mess....
boat is a '67 Eastport with wood console. (looks original).

AHA! Someone gave up on the wood screws, drilled all the way through and put in machine screws with nuts in a bad spot.

One option is this: Remove the screws, slightly enlarge the screw holes (on the inside only) as required for about 3/8" and substitute SS "T" nuts, which will pull in flush with the inside surface of the block. Then cut the screws off so that they no longer protrude into the storage space.

If you can't find SS "T" nuts, use galvanized and seal the whole works up in 5200.

Someone will come along with an easier/better method shortly.

Another possible solution is to use brass threaded inserts... They have a coarse wood thread on the out side diameter and a machine screw thread on the inside... These cane be put in on the jiont side of the deck blocks and then the need to use a long (through) bolt is no longer needed (i.e. no cutting of bolts or screws)... I normally put a little glue on the OD of the inserts to insure they don't turn when tightening the machine screws...

Great idea - Home Depot a good place for these? Regular hardware store?
Thanks,
