Buying a CPD 21' Justice. Limited to 4 stroke power. Mercury 225 or Yamaha 225 are the only options. Don't want to start a war, just real advice from experience or data. Thank You, Andy.

I have a friend who is a certified Mercury mechanic, and he runs the Yamaha. He just loves it. Although neither motor is "proven" yet, the Yamaha looks good. They have also had better reliability than Mercury in the past few years. |

I thought the two were the same motor??? Was there not a long thread on this? Now I am confused. Either way, go with which ever one has a dealer you can count on and trust. |

They are the same exact engine. One has a black paint and a slightly different cover. It is also $3k less. The Merc is actaully quieter than the Yamaha. |

Quite curious that the "the same exact engine(s)" would have different acoustical qualities.perhaps the black paint has better low frequency absorption powers... |

Boating magazine had a whole article on this topic back in May or June. The Mercury motor is the same except that Merc designed their own cowling for it. The article pointed out that the Merc cowling had better performance in terms of noise reduction but otherwise the engines are identical for now. Mercury is supposedly going to have their own 4-stroke version of the 225 ready in 2004. Just curious about the comment that one is $3k cheaper. Which one is cheaper the Merc or the Yamaha ? |

Being yammies are riding(should say selling) on their reputaion....merc is cheaper. I think the yammie lists for $17,995 and merc $14,995. I have seen yammies going for $15,900. |

A Mercury & Yamaha dealer told me that Yamaha's are more expensive because they have a more lucrative commission package to the Dealer. That is, a Dealer makes more money selling a Yamaha than a Mercury. The pricing on this new 225 seems to confirm it. How can Mercury sell a 99% Yamaha built product for less than Yamaha? Seems to make no sense at all! But that's how they penetrated the US controlled industry in the first place, and got the Dealers to get the engines out on the boats. Guess who pays the extra profit to the Dealer? Why the buyer, of course. And if you ever need service, you'll pay more at Yamaha also, and wait longer. Just ask Milwaukee Whaler! In this particular case, much to my surprise considering how this engine swap bewteen them happened, the "black Yamaha" seems like a better & quieter deal than the grey one. |

Capt Tidy - Yes, this is for work (if you can call it work!) For the rest, I do understand that the motors are "the same exact engine". My purchase of the boat will come from CPD with the engine and hardware installed, not from a local dealer. The spec for the Mercury 225 is listed as a 2003 model and the Yamaha is a 2002. I am just wondering if any "real world" experience has been had or reported on either motor from any of you guys and gals. The price is a Law Enforcement deal and is the same for either motor (I wish I could get this deal). Thanks again for any advise. Andy. |

No offense...then who gives a crap. Get what you want....I would get the Merc so people like me won't bust your balls for spending my tax dollars on foreign engines. |

My understanding after having looked at the 225s as well is that they are not exactly the same. The units from 75Hp and up have the same engine/powerhead, but the lower units are different. Eg. the 115 Merc 4 stroke doesn't come in a counter-rotating unit, but the Yamahas do. Yamahas use a larger lower unit than the Mercs in that size. |

Bigshot, no offense taken. Bust Away! Ordered the Mercury because it is a 2003 model. Thanks to all.

Good! I have a real beef that our local coast guard runs yamahas:)JustFish....that is true on their other models. The 225 is a yamaha in black paint, except for the cowl which was redesigned by merc and supposably better. |
