I just received a quote for a 2003 25HP Yamaha 4 stroke for my 1968 13' Whaler.
$2799 motor +$300 remote controls +$300 tach +$275 for stainless prop. I can't spend that much.

Can anyone recommend what I should do to be able to get a reliable 25HP motor with remote cables, control, tach for $2K or less?
I wanted to go new for reliability, but it looks impossible now. Any reputable dealers in used outboards in NJ, Delaware area ?

I only paid $500 for the boat which is fixing up great and will be ready for spring 2003. It had a 1967 Johnson 33HP on it, which I cannot get started. I feel it is not worth it to dump any $ into it at this point. Almost pulled my arm out of the socket trying to start it.

thanks,
Dave

Hi, Dave.

You might find that a modest investment in a Manual and a few minutes "on the muffs" would restore your old Johnny to like-new performance.

'67 Is not really old for an outboard, particularly an OMC. There are many thousands in regular service.

You can get lots of free assistance on iBoats forums if you decide to give it a try.

There are several outlets that sell Honda engines coming off of resort leases at well below new prices, and provide warranty as well.

Finally, you might find a bargain on Ebay.

Good luck.

Dave,
Are you going with a 15" or 20" shaft.
You may find a good deal on a 15". There are very few boats that will take a 15". So if you find a dealer stuck with one you may get a good deal.
The price on that 25 Yammy 4 stroke is cheap(is it a 15"?), forget the tach and SS prop. Your still over 2K, but I don't know if you go new that you'll do much better.
Regards, Jay

Place by me has new Yam 25's for $2400. You will find a deal on E-Bay, there are always new or nearly new engines for sale....pretty resonable too. I vaguely remember a new 25 OMC 2cyl for $1999....Johnson.

Nick, is that Yamaha 25 a 4stroke with P T/T?
If so the dealers up "this a way" are selling them for twice that much.

Regarding Mercurys, you can get a 4-stroke 25 for around $3000 at West marine, and they are never known to be cheap. Cabela's has similar pricing on Nissans, but try and find a servicing dealer!

My dealer will ship you a new Merc 25 2-stroke, 15" shaft, manual start for $2096 + shipping, no sales tax. Doubt if you'll beat that deal. Surprisingly, electric start is only $104 more! (highly recommended if your've got radio/sonar). You could also try a Bass Pro Adventure World store for an excellent price on a Merc.

With these small, relatively smokeless 2-strokes, I can't imagine 4-stroke design makes much difference, unless you're on Lake Tahoe or going to do a ton of low speed trolling.

Dave -
I recently repowered and refitted a 1970 13. Called around lots of places and used the web, and learned to always ask for New Old Stock. For example, a Year 2000 25 Johnson, Merc, Rude or Yammy that went unsold, but is still new in the box. Dealers typically call these motors "Non-currents". New is new, I don't really care what the year is. I lucked up on a 2000 25 J, 15" (short shaft), remote electric start, prop and tank for $1875 in Charleston, SC area. Cash and carry, I gave a credit card # on the phone to hold it at that price. Dealer said it was last one he had. Controls were about $250 if memory serves. Bought new teleflex NFB thru a marine discount catalog. Installed myself, piece of cake. I'll email you a pic. "Non-Current", or New Old Stock. I'd buy NEW if at all possible, I hate others used problems. Best, Mav

lhg,
What will your dealer sell a new Merc 90 2 stroke for? And what about the 60 or 70(?) 4 stroke EFI? I still haven't repowered the Nauset.
Thanks, Jay

jay....that was no pT&T and maybe manual start. Still a great deal for a 4 stroke. I personally think electric start on small engines25 & smaller) is not necessary and the lack of battery is a plus. But that is my opinion.

Nick,
Any deals on power for my Nauset?
I'll be down your way next week in between fishing and ending up in New Orleans. I'll have my van with me and could transport a nice new 60-90 engine.
Thanks, Jay

Jay - I think the Merc 90 2-stroke is about $4800 or so. Forget hauling it in your truck. It could be cheaper to have it shipped for about $150 and avoid your state sales tax. You might also check out Bass Pro pricing.

Don't know what the 60 4-stroke costs, since he doesn't publish those prices. But I keep hearing it's a great engine. I know the 115 EFI 4-stroke is about $7000, if you can find one.

One of our other Members was just quoted $7000 + $200 shipping, no tax, for a Merc 150 carbed 2-stroke, 2002 model, from this same dealer in Ft Lauderdale.
