Knockerjoe's new 22' has the juices flowing for the next Whaler again. Very pretty rig, Joe. Leads to a question I've had a little while: Is there any reason one would probably want to fill the transom notch once you installed an engine set-back bracket on one of these larger hulls? Seems every time I've seen a big Whaler with Whalerdrive or another bracket, the hull has been either sold originally by Whaler as a full transom model or an owner has modiified the hull, actually filled up the notch as on Joe's new rig and in one of the latest Cetacea pages. Being primarily interested in fishing, I envision owning a notched transom 22' or 25' with a bracket and platform back there. Not really interested in the extra storage a full transom provides, when landing that big fish off the back would be made much easier by leaving the notch there. Any thoughts on the matter? Have come close a couple of times on 25's but just not pulled the trigger, yet.

Yes, a bracket can be installed on a notched transom Outrage, 22 or 25. I have seen a few, and it seems to work quite well. The bracket is installed flush with the top of the transom, and drain holes must be plugged, with a bilge pump installed to get rid of the splash. Under certain conditions you will get water washing over the top of the bracket, and without a full transom, some of this will probably wash into the splash well. The bracket must be designed so that you will be able to run a 30" single, or 25" twins.

With the notched transom, it will not be necessary to drill the 3" diameter drains through the splash rail and transom to evacuate water quickly, as is done with the full transom models. The notch will suffice for this purpose. Engine cabling will have to be creatively done so that it doesn't look terrible out there in the open. If twins are being used, engines without separate oil injection tanks would be a BIG plus. On a 22, the 26" offset engine weights could be an additional complicating problem, since the aftermarket bracket won't give flotation like the Whaler Drive does. So that appears to be the biggest downside. On a 25, no problem.
