Author Topic:   Console sizes - 17 Outrage vs 17 Montauk

Was the console on a 17-Outrage the same as the Montauk in 1988? Or was the taller super console available on the 17-Outrage? I can't tell from the pictures of the 17's in Cetecea.

Ah come on... did I really mess up the subject line that much, doesn't anyone know the answer to this question?

I am curious where the pictures of the 17-Outrage are in Cetacea.

Now Taylor, your query is rife with ambiguity. How are we supposed to help you if you do not help us?

Please be more specific. Which 17-Outrage are you talking about? There are at least three different models that I can think of.

Are you asking what kind of console was in a 1988 17-Outrage? No console because there was no such boat in 1988.

You really confuse things by using the term "super console" which was an optional console offered in two different widths on the Outrages from the 1980's and should not be confused with the newer versions of the basic center console.

I too am curious as to where in Cetacea there are photos of any 17-Outrage. Can you direct us?

But seriously, if I may read between the lines and assume you are wondering if the Dougherty designed 17-Outrage first made for the 1990 model year has the same console as your 1988 Montauk, the answer is: no.

When the 17-Outrage first appeared, it had the slightly altered console that would appear as the standard console for all the Outrages in the early 1990’s (with the exception of the 19-Outrage II). I believe it is the same as the console on CaptCornchowder's 19-Outrage and Contender25's new Outrage as well as the console on John Flook's 1992 22-Outrage, Outré.

This console is slightly taller with a storage bin on top of the console but without the “Shepherd’s Crook.” The access doors are plexiglass and there is no wood trim whatsoever.

If you want to see pictures of it, let me know and I'll bring some catalogs to Burk's Cafe tonight.

OK, OK, I found it. Here's a 17-Outrage in Cetacea (fourth photo):

Note the lack of the Shepherd's Crook.

[Thanks for cleaning up my subject line, Jim]

Sorry to be ambigous, but that's all I know. I did not want to go into too much detail because I am looking at the console cover on Ebay from an 'Outrage 17'. (year not defined). Size is the issue. Will it fit a Montauk?

My buddy with the 1988 Montauk stores it on a buoy most of the summer. I just helped her pull all the wood of her console last Sunday. Actually I removed it while at the same time extracting a promise from her to refinish it over the winter. I'm not sure I was doing her a favor. :)

I did try and do the research first, going through Cetecea's photo log and looking for the text '17 Outrage' and '17-Outrage' in the listings. Tom, those are the two boats I saw. But its kind of hard to tell exeactl what the console looks like in those two.

Anyway, it sounds as if its not just a difference in height that the seller on ebay sees, the shephards crook may make an Outrage 17 console cover a non starter.

Please do *not* bring any whaler catalogues to Burk's. There will be ladies present ;)

Taylor:

I think you are referring to an item I have listed on ebay. So maybe I can help. I currently own the 17 Outrage (1991) and just sold my 79'Montauk.

I never thought of putting the cover on the Montauk (duh) to see how it fits.

I can tell you that this console is not the same size as the Montauk. It is taller and probably bigger. So, it would most likely fit over the Montauk console, but loosly. Hope that helps! Kind of ambiguous, I know.

Tom, as a side note: What three models of 17 Outrage are you referring to? I only know of two. Email me directly if you like as to not divert from the original questions of this post.

Thanks, Marc

Mark, I wondered if it might be someone on the forum. I don't mind if it fits loosly, but I worried about the shephards crook on the Montauk, which is apparently not present or much smaller on the 17 - Outrage. Any thoughts on that?

Sorry, incomplete thought... since shephards crook sticks out in front of the console on the montuak about a foot, then the whole cover may not go down over the console, the circumfrence might be too small.

Taylor:

How quickly we forget. I couldn't figure out what your concern was but now I know. My gut feeling tells me it wouldn't fit good. I will go put the cover on the outrage and see how much room there is where the shepards crook is.

I'll post tomorrow the answer...

Marc.
