I have been looking at everything out there and think this is the right boat for me. Yahama on back and no T-top it should be dependable and fit in the garage. Please feel free to share thoughts on this model. This site is a great way to learn about whalers thanks in advance to those who respond

I own a 1998 20' Outrage and absolutely love it. Best boat I have had. It handles big water well and has good enough space for family cruising. I have a 175hp EFI Merc and find it dependable. The boat is incrediably solid and I intend to keep it for a long time as the boat is so versitale.

The older Outrage models look fantastic. Too bad the wood takes so much to maintain. Our 13-foot Whaler has about as much wood as we can take care of. The costs of the newer 1996-2003 Whalers without any wood are too high when new. I thought that a used 18-21 footer would be the ticket. The Justice 19 CPD is pricy around $30,000.00 for the hull only. I thought an Outrage 20-21 with a Yahama would be priced in the mid-twenty-thousand dollar range. Thanks for the feedback.

I have a 1996 19-Outrage which is the same boat and I like it very much. It does have it's shortcomings though.
1. Not very much deck space with cooler up front and the leaning post/ livewell combo, and the bait station/rod holder deal installed.
2. I have had to replace the livewell saltwater pump about three times. The shur-flow pump that comes standard is a POS. Upgrade to a ITT par-max 4 or whatever it's called.
3. If you have the swivel helm chairs instead of the leaning post, standby for the chair posts to come loose at the bases. I think Swellmonster might have info on that.
4. My boat also porpoises more than I like. Hopefully you have trim tabs. My boat might be set up wrong, and or maybe I have a prop with too much bow lift, but the bottom line is that when it gets a little bumpy, I have a hard time keeping her on a plane and keeping the bow down in order to slice through the chop. She wants to bounce.
Especially with a couple of fat buddies sitting in the stern quarter seats.

That's about it. So far I have about 400 hours on the boat and only a couple of small hairline cracks in the gel coat in the vicinity of the fish box gutters. Otherwise I am very happy. Hopefully I'll keep this boat forever, maybe someday I'll tow it to the Bahamas behind a Grand Banks :-)

Phatwhaler out.

I own a 1997 20- Outrage. It is a great boat. It is very versatile. I have been in creeks with 2.5 feet of water and I have been 40 miles off shore in 100 feet of water. I bought a 20 for that reason.I would love a bigger boat, but I can't afford to only fish offshore. My boat also came with a 175-HP Mercury outboard. She runs between 45 and 50 MPH. The best part is when I go all-day fishing 40 to 50 miles offshore is uses only about 40 gallons of gas. I have had friends of mine compare my boat to 21- and 23-foot boats in other builder's lines and say I have just as much boat as those guys do.
