Replaced the 250 Yamaha engines with Honda 225 four strokes on my 1990 walkaround 27 ft. Whaler. Top speed is 44 mph (only 1 mph slower than the 250 2 strokes). Cruise speed mileage is 1.3 to 1.5 mpg (a 30 to 40 percent increase). All in all, these engines are a great choice for anyone considering repowering their larger Whaler. The Hondas were installed by Seaboard Marine/Pacific Outboards in Oxnard, California.

Congratulations Neil on your repower to Honda. A couple of years ago I towed my 15' whaler with a 45 hp 4 stroke Honda from the frozen north in Atlantic Canada to the Floida Keys (2700 miles). I also fished the Gulf Stream south of Palm Beach. It almost never failed that every time I launched the boat or topped up the fuel tank at a gas pump, someone would ask me about the Honda. Matt and I were putting the boat on the trailer to make the 37 mile road trip to Key West when two guys pulled up with a flats boat with a 200+ hp Merc on the back and asked us about the Honda and how was it on fuel. We told them about running 7 1/2 miles west to the back country at 23 mph and back at WOT of 28 mph. Since we had caught some pin fish and had kept them alive in the anchor well. We run 2 1/2 miles south to Bahia Honda to fish Tarpon. Total distance was 20 miles. We used $4.50 in fuel. They were impressed.

All the Best with your new engines. One helpful tip for you: even if you don't hear them, they are still running.

All the Best,
David

What type of engine mounting bracket do you have on your 27' hull, I have a whaler drive on my 1989 25 Revenge ,I spoke with Chuck Bennett @ BW regarding the weight limit,It seems like it may not support the 225 4 stroke weight.I spoke with Eric @ Pacific Outboards also,The pricing was good but I was hesistant about the weight & engine clearance on the whaler drive.Any info would be appreciated

Well done on the Honda call. Their outboards seem to be a LOT more popular up here in The Great White North than in the USA judging from the discussions on this website. I have both a 90 and a 9.9 on my Montauk and they are TOTALLY reliable and I get MUCH better fuel economy (range) than I did with my 13 SS with a Merc 40 2-stroke. They are so simple that nothing can really go wrong with them (like the Civics in the mid-70s) and I bet when something does go wrong (touch wood) they'll be cheap to repair.

I have the Whaler Drive bracket on my boat. The engines were mounted in the same holes that were used for my 250 h.p. Yamahas.
