As said in the earlier post - "new owner" - read "new sucker"

I have a leaking fuel tank in my 82 Outrage, I've searched the site for some specifics on change out and find some tid bits but need more info before I tackle it myself.

Does the console have to come out, with everything disconnected, or can it be laid to the stbd side?

What about the seats - can the mounts be left attached ?

Sent a note to Meeks to get an estimate for them to do the work, no answer, has anyone taken the cowards way out and paid someone else to do the job ? How much ?

Sure is a beautiful shape on the hull, only got to use it once, filled it with gas and had a great ride !

Thanks
Dave W

filled what with gas? Not trying to be a wiseguy but maybe the fuel fill hose has a hole and it filled your bilge, etc. removing the tank is easy, getting it back together is a biotch but not too bad. The refoaming is the biggest pain. I have done it on 2 Robalos and it required moving the console away but not out so you can leave most electrionics hooked up.

Yep, full of gasoline. It was running into the sump on the stbd side, so I pulled the covers and it was FULL of something that smelled just like gasoline. I flushed with water, then put in some Murphy soap and drove around for a while - with the boat following me, on the trailer. Then flushed some more, and dug out a small sump in the foam aft of the tank, and pumped it dry - with an electric fuel pump (fuel thief). Smelled SO GOOD! Next day full of liquid that smells and looks like fresh gasoline. Checked all of the hoses and they seem to be OK - if I do the job I'll replace them.

Thanks,
Dave W.

Dave W,
What size is your Outrage?
I just pulled my fuel tank deck cover off today as I'm doing a total refurb to my 18' Outrage.
I stripped everything out of the boat and just got to the cover today and man is that thing heavy.
Personally, I don't see how you would change out a gas tank without diconnecting everything.

Dave,
Mines a '81. Sounds like you have a project in front of you also.
I don't understand how it was getting into the starboard sump, mine is totally cut off from the gas tank.
You should probably post this in the repairs/mods section, more people might see it.

Dave,

There's no way you're going to be able to install a new fuel tank without disconnecting everything. Everything that comes out of the console passes through the fuel tank cover.

You could theoretically leave the seats (pedestal bases or RPS legs) attached to the cover but since they simply unscrew so you would be better off removing them. It will make storing the cover easier if you can just lean it up against something without that stuff sticking out.

Gep,

The sump is not totally cut off from the area around the tank. There is a “dam” that separates the spaces but water is free to flow over the top of this dam through the notch where the hose exits the tank area, thus both spaces are really part of the bilge. The gas that Dave is seeing and smelling is probably floating and flowing on top of the water that is around the fuel tank (gasoline is quite a bit lighter than water).

This tank swap has been done a few times by members of the FORUM. There are several good threads that discuss the procedure Here’s one: http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/001494.html

I think Florida Marine Tanks is the source for the tank itself. http:www.floridamarinetanks.com Note: The tank in the very first 18’s built in 1981 and maybe 1982 was a 58 gallon tank. From then on they used a 63 gallon tank. I do not know if there is any difference in the cavity of the hull between these different years. I also wonder if those first 58 gallon tanks were plastic as they were on some of the larger models during those years and if this accounts for the difference in capacity.

There you go...in the robalos you could just tilt the console forward.

Tom C,
That water in gas tank area would have to be pretty high to flow over the "dam".
Mine was redone in '91 or '97 with a 63 gallon tank so I would assume the cavity stayed the same.
xsailor, I took some pictures this morning if you want to see the mess your getting into.

You bet Mike, send the pictures on !

Pumped the void down as far as I could yesterday, and it's running over again this morning.
