I have a friend who winterizes his boat by rubbing on a coat of wax and leaving it on--he wipes it off in the spring. His theory is that the thick wax offers extra protection against the elements. Does anyone else do this?

I can't see the reasoning here.
A coat of wax is good protection even when buffed out. I can't believe it would protect any better not buffed out.
I sure wouldn't want to buff that wax out after sitting all winter.

I did that.....

Once.

And learned never to do _that_ again.

The wax I used in the fall was so hard by the spring, my arms about fell off trying to get it buffed out.

Want to echo Don's comments. Will also add that tried same thing back when car bumpers were chrome plated. Same result - very difficult to remove hardened wax in spring.
