How many of you have a stereo unit installed on your whaler that is not in an electronics box or in the cabin? I am debating having one installed and just thinking of how long they last and how the weather affects them in the long term. Is it worth the trouble? Or should I just buy a portable to bring along? I just installed a new "waterproof" Clarion CD stereo in my 22OR. I can't speak to durability yet, but I'm happy I did it. It's nice having the better quality sound. |

I am in the process of installing one (JBL Marine)which i will mount inside a Poly-Planar stereo enclosure which will be mounted inside my console. I will attach and mount a remote control so I only have to touch the receiver itself when I change the CD. If I really wanted to get fancy (as if this weren't complicated enough), I could get a disk changer to go with it - but I won't - one CD at a time is enough, especially if you burn your own and get 80 minutes of music per disk.I think this arrangement will be utterly impervious to any sort of weather condition, and should last a long time. |

I had a car stereo mounted in my console behind a small louvred door. It lasted for 6 or so years. I did use polyplanar speakers though...they lasted well also...Dave |

I have a sea-worthy cd player in my 17. Good sterio. But i put it half way under the steering wheel. This way, if anyone tries to steal it, they have to take off the wheel. |

Consider a unit that plays MP3, and CD-RW formats. You can put 10 hours of music on a CD by use of the MP3 format.Dave W |

I've got a Jensen MCD 9424 flush-mounted in the console of my OR22 (AM, FM, CD). It has a silicone/rubber floppy sort of cover that really isn't waterproof but keeps at least bigger things at bay. I initially had trouble with water intrusion but found that it was because I had not epoxied the raw edges of the cut-out I'd made in the console, and water was migrating from above. Fixed that problem and have had no trouble for two years. The unit sounds great with Bose 131 flush monted speakers in the removable panels below the gunwales on each side about opposite the console.kingfish |

Don,I use a Bose Acoustic Wave. You can get a weather proof bag and a DC adapter. It sounds great and you can take it with you where ever you go. Regards, Jay |
