I just bought a 15' 1987 Whaler with an original center console and mahogany seats and side boards. I've been told this model was called a "Baby Montauk". There is a formed trough with a cover running down the center of the boat for cabling from the console. I've been looking for a 15' for a while, never seen this layout before. I liked it, so I bought it! The orginal driver's seat mahogany plank is gone and a previous owner installed an aftermarket cooler-seat with cushion. I have part of the original tube steel back support hardware. I'd like to restore it to original condition, if possible. Any info. on this model appreciated.

minimontauk,

Welcome to the FORUM. The model you have just acquired is officially known as a Sport 15 Center Console. I had not heard the nickname of "Baby Montauk" before but it is kind of fitting given that the center console itself is a chopped down version of the Montauk's console but without the rail.

Take some time to explore the continuousWave site, not only the archived threads in the FORUM but the Reference an Cetacea sections as well. Many of your questions will be answered.

Here is some specific information about the 15's and your Center Console model: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/15/models.html

Hey minimontauk,
We had a "mini" like that, it was a 15 with the center counsil in the middle. We fixed it up. Nice fishing boat for fisherman. But you know what, it had a 70 hp mercury on it (old.) and no power tilt. We put a new fuel pump in the engine and it ran like a champ. nice ride too.

However, the power tilt, i wish we had it. Someone came from chicago and bought it. And really my dad liked it, at that time, we had a 14 rage. I didn't like the 15 b/c of the big bow rail. (makes the boat look so dumb in my opinion) because we had a counsil that was small and the big bow rail. It was kind of funny becuase it looked like the bow rail dwarfed the boat lol. Good luck with the 15

Thanks for the immediate reply, guys. I actually like the bow rail, maybe it will keep my kids onboard. This is all new to me, but I expect to be hitting this site hard now that I finally got a Whaler. The boat is in great shape overall, wasn't cheap, but these boats seem to hold their value. Thanks for the advice.

Welcome to the family of 15'ers. I own a striper with 70 Johnson. Great riding hull if not the best I've been in for the 15' category. Storage space has been my only complaint, which is true for about all small whalers. Good luck with your new boat.

Hey Tom, thanks for the link on 15' Whalers. Mine appears to be all original except for the rear seat. Unlike the description, the plank seat in front of the console also appears original. I am missing the rear seat plank, the backrest plank with the curved braces, and the short tight radius stainless tubes that attach to the backrest. I have the backrest tubing that spans the width of the boat and runs forward to meet the rails either side of the console. I like the look of the mahogany seating, and it probably would give me one more seating capacity. The one advantage of the aftermarket cooler seat is the added locking storage. A few Newcomers questions:

1. Is it possible to buy original Boston Whaler parts for old boats?

2. If not, are there aftermarket sources for this stuff?

3. Are original details available so I could make the parts I need?

Thanks for the input.

Parts are available for the older boats from many places. My favorite is TwinCities Marine and many people will agree with me on this site about them. They are great people and have much better prices than I have found with local Whaler dealers in my area.

Congrats on your boat, I always wanted one of those, awesome boat.

MiniMontauk,
I also have a 15 CC. Congratulations on an excellent choice. I added Montauk console rails to my 15, and I really like it. The "shepherd's crook" protrudes a bit far in front of the console, but there's lots to hold onto.
You may want to test the thwart seat idea by putting a temporary board across where the original seat was mounted. Many 15'ers find that seat a trifle low for them. Hence the cooler seat replacement.
If you're interested, I can e-mail you a photo or two of the console with Montauk rails. As mentioned by several members, CMI in Mass. offers OEM Whaler rails. Pricey, but top quality.

I know the cooler seat was optional....in FRONT of the console. All the 15 CC's I've seen, including mine, had the rear twart seat with wraparound seat back and railing and a cooler seat in front of the console. I would take the front twart and move it aft and put a cooler up front. Makes getting around the boat easier and looks way better. Try it before you go out and buy the twart.

congrats ..... after owning 2 diffrent 13s, I bought a 1976 sport with a 1986 merc 50 (Buffalo Soldier-sag harbor,n.y.) .... great boat. I have since added a 1986 center console that has a 1996 yamaha 60 (noname-boynton beach fla.).
the 15 is a great hull ... you were real lucky to find a center console ... they are one of the rarest models.
ps ... thwart helm seat (original and mounted on top of the side wood) is the drawback on that boat ... leaves my 46 yr old knees a little stiff !

minimontauk,

You can get the rail parts from CMI as noted above. I agree with Tully Mars that Twin Cities Marine is one of the best Whaler dealers to deal with if you need parts straight from a factory source.

The 15 Center Console had the wrap around stern rail as standard equipment but I have seen some with just the side rails which would have been a delete option with addition of straight side rails. This was usually done on boats with dual pedestal seats in lieu of the thwart seat, something you might think about. I had side by side pedestal seats on my 15 Striper and they are far more comfortable than a wood plank.

The 48 quart Igloo cooler with cushion and chocks was an option. You can still get the cooler just about anywhere and the chocks can be had from Whaler itself.

The Whaler style cushion is available from Hall's Nautical Upholstery hallsnautical.com

There really isn't anything on your boat that you cannot get from one source or another.

Man, you guys are a goldmine! I guess I should probably drive the boat for a while before I think about reconfiguring/restoring the seating, eh? The previous owner used the boat for fishing on Quabbin Reservoir in Mass. He said he took the bench seat out because it "gave him a backache". Too bad he lost some of the original parts. I'll seriously consider restoration when my bank accout comes out of cardiac arrest! Thanks all.
