OK, Santa was very good to me and brought a Standard Horizon Eclispse VHF. In the West Marine catalog this model is described as submersible to JIS 7 standards. However, the documentation included with the radio says only that the microphone is submersible. My intent was to install a submersible radio so that spray and washdown would not be a problem. Is anyone else using this radio on a Montauk? Should I bring it back for a more weather resistant model? |

There's the old Eclipse and the new Eclipse+. IIRC, the old one (no plus) was not JIS7, the new one is. And, yes you want a submersible radio on

I have used various radios on open boats.Try placing a heavy see through plastic bag over the radio with one end opened. You can enclose the microphone in a plastic sandwich bag with a rubber band arround the open end where the wire enters the mic.Have done this with an older Eclipse+ mounted on the vertical surface of console-never had a problem. |

I have the Standard eclipse + radio on my montauk. The radio has a plastic cover with it so it is adviseable that you put it on. Mine has performed very well (5 years now). I had an ICOM and it did hold up. So I replaced it and it broke again. (IC-M59). Ken |

I just noticed on their website, that SH has a $40 rebate on the Intrepid+ through 01/31/03, which price the Intrepid+ just about where the Eclipse+ is. http://www.standardhorizon.com/ Chuck |

I discovered I still had my 2001 West catalog and did a little research. SH changed the Eclipse+ a good deal between 2001 and 2002. The Eclipse+ 2001 does not appear to have been submersible, has concentric volume and squelch knobs, and the mike cord comes out of the lower right of the front of the radio. The Eclipse+ 2002 is JIS-7 submersible, has separate volume and squelch knobs, and the mike cord comes out of the right side of the radio, and $20 cheaper than the 2001. And I still vaguely remember that there was Interesting. I wonder how they got past the

Newt, I too bought the same radio (in the spring of 20002) based on West Marine description that it is a submersible unit. As you discovered, the documentation indicates that only the mic is submersible. I installed it anyway - flush mounted in the console of my 15SS. No problems so far, with one season's worth of rain and washdown. Perhaps the documentation is not up to date? |

I downloaded the manual for the Eclipse+ 2002 from the SH website. It indeed says that only the mike is submersible. But their website goes to great lengths to Here's what I'd do: Skookum, this includes you. BTW: there is some really screwy pricing on Eclipse+, black, new: $149

Thanks for all the insight. The model I have is the eclipse +. It sounds like the unit is submersible, but it is quite odd that the documentation doesn't say so. I am going to go ahead and install the radio. |
