I just purchased a nice project 13 footer. Hull # 26746, 1966. She was buggered up pretty bad, with the normal bass boat add-on's and old 33 hp Evinrude. I am restoring this boat for resale. Thus, the question is: For resale purposes, should I retain the tiller cable steering and old wheel, white rub rail (not bad shape) or upgrade to new telflex , (?) Motor size, and new rub rail style. I plan to replace all the wood back to spec's. The groups input would be welcomed.

I can't seem to find the previous discussion on the collectable value of a Whaler, but the gist was that it is the utility of the boat that makes it valuable, and aside from a few purists, quality updates will be welcome by buyers. That said, I think the old wheel is cool. |

For resale there is one rule.Make it nice enough and safe enough to sell. Anymore than that you are eating into your profit. Problem with a 13' is profit is slim to begin with. Rubrail at $100 plus 5 hours labor is not worth it if one on boat is good. $150 cable steering + $40(SS Wheel)is great but if you can get away with just a $40 Wheel it will look just as good, etc. repowering, etc gets very expensive and being that a 66 in great shape with an old 33 is maybe worth $2k....watch your wallet. PS buy the tempo outboard paint and make the engine look like new...very important. |
