I understand the reasoning behind mounting an electric trolling motor on the bow of a boat but has anyone used a stern mount trolling motor on a 17 whaler? The only time I would ever use such a motor is for crabbing or trolling and it seems to me that a transom mount motor would be just fine for these applications.

I bought a transom-mount trolling motor with my latest rig, an O/R 18', several years ago. Pros are that it lets me leave my bow rail intact, permits a guest (often my wife) to have the bow platform for fishing, puts me close to the live well in the splash area, and it keeps me in better view of the depth/fish finder and boat controls. Cons include, directing the boat is different than with a bow-mounted motor and that takes some getting used to, and I still prefer fishing off the bow when trolling. Like a lot of life, in my case, the stern-mounted motor was a compromise, and I'm satisfied with it. I think you will find that the same factors apply on the 17'.
