I've been away for a while, so please forgive me, but I was wondering: Whatever became of th $5000.00 plus donated this past summer for the betterment of this site?

Regards.

Dave

The donations to jimh were a way that users of continuouswave could say thank you to him for providing us with a commercial-free website with great content and a moderated forum. The money was a gift and we made it clear to him that he could use it however he wished--accessories for his boat, pay off the new server, etc. Some people did not understand this and started a thread about a wish list, and a search feature was added, but it did not have anything to do with the money we donated.

I'm hoping that Jimh took a nice vacation with the money. Anyone who puts up with this crew all year long deserves a nice vacation.

I contributed to show my appreciation for the website and Jim's hard work. If he uses the money to make site improvements - great, if he uses it to vacation in Tahiti - even better. Oh, and by the way, thanks again Jim!

My contribution was just a gift to say "thank you", nothing more. The search engine was not a result of the gifts. In fact, it was in place long before Jim got the donations.

Ditto to the above. A gift, nothing more, nothing less. By the way, how did the plaque turn out? Or did I miss it?

I will guess it was invested with insight and care. After it ripens 10 years, it will be used to help all members of the Whaler community. Then jimh will host a Whaler social with the remains of the investment... All $0.25 of it.

The real answer is: "Exactly what jimh wanted". There was no strings attached.

Interesting replies to David Pendleton's question. After all, the donation campaign started as a drive to raise money for hardware and software upgrades. Here is the original post:

"It has been brought to my attention that jimh, our humble web master, is in need of some hardware and software upgrades to keep this site humming.
I would like to propose another campaign to champion this worthy cause (see second part of Cetacea 47).

Please let me know your thoughts.

Regards, Jay"

I would have contributed regardless of the final use of the money, but lets call a spade a spade.

First of all let me explain a few things.

a)It was brought to my attention by 2 KEY members of this site that Jim was looking for some new "stuff" for the site and was having decision problems because of the price. I don’t know what it or they were and I don’t care.

b)I didn’t know if we would raise $100 or $10,000 It didn’t matter to me, however I was very happy with the out come.

c)This site is free and these contributions were made clear that they were voluntary!

d)For the most part, the PEOPLE who asked for the most were the ones that contributed the least!

e)I don’t think Jim has to answer to anyone, do you?

f)Need I go further?

I don’t care what Jim does with the money, especially after what he put up with over the last year!

Regards, Jay

With all the headaches, crap and pig-tripe jimh's had t'suffer from a select group of mah esteemed colleagues at this site, mebbe he bought 500 bottles of aspirin, or 5000 rolls of terlit paper, or mebbe a new crank handle for his sausage grinder. Any way he saw fit t'use the money was fine with me.

JFM, no need to explain yourself...at least not on my behalf. You rallied the troops and did one heck of a job of it!

I think we all know that the cash gift was simply a gift, with no strings attached, as a "thank you" from all the participants.

Boy I do hope it wasn't all spent on toilet paper and aspirin though!

Maybe it was invested in Microsoft stock!

Larry,

Good point! If Jim put it in MSFT when he got it he would be ahead by better than 20% today.

Hmm, somehow I think giving any of it to Mr Gates would be Jim last choice!

Ya did say it was for some computer stuff. Personally I do not give two winks where the money was used, but it was asked for with the premise that it was for computer stuff.

I think this web site has gone down hill in the past years because of too much moaning.

every one should lighten up including Jim. His crazy post touching on Papa H is prime example of what is wrong with this site. i am glad that some people here can type and spell. i am glad that others use "I" instead of "i", and i am glad that we raised a whole bunch of money for Jim.

But i am feel bad when i see "men" my senior by many many years acting like rich little pussys.

Guys this is a site about boats and who cares if some young guys have a little fun.

Don't get your panties in a bunch.

John O,

Wonderful example of how to achieve what you were suggesting should happen. You have shown wisdom well beyond your years. The noticable lack of moaning and the poignant discription of "men your senior" in your post convinces me; now that I've seen the light I say "Lead on, John, Lead on!

I must stop posting after a night out. Is there any way to get a breath-a-lizer on this computer thing?

You just need to put a post-it on the monitor that staes.."PUT THE KEYBOARD DOWN...YOU DRUNK!"

Keeps me out of a lot of trouble. Imagine if I posted while under the influence....WOW!
