Just bought a 1985 22' revenge. It has sat neglected for about 2 years. I am taking it in for a tune up and look over but need advice on what else might need to be done. It has no trimtabs. Are they necessary? If so, could I get away with the type that mount over the prop (225 yamaha ob)?

Also, how best to polish the gelcoat? Can I use an electric buffer (like for waxing cars?) What brand of cleaner/wax should I use?

Thanks.

Congrat's on your boat.

With regard to the trim tabs, I've found them to be very useful, they are great when leveling the load, with getting on plane and I've been told can help with efficiency, I'd recommend getting them.

For polishing I have a random orbit polisher from Sears (cab't remember the model#) approx $70, this works fine but I'd say shop around for a little more robust model, you'll be happy you did.

The wax I bought was recommended by others on this forum and is truly a great group of products -Collinite. They have multiple products and you can check them out on www.waxbytes.com .

Good luck with your boat!

Congrats on your Revenge. I've got the one on Cetacea page 44. They're an outstanding boat.

Trim tabs are a must if you like riding level. If you don't mind listing to one side or the other, don't get them. But I hate listing, so my boat has them. Many folks recommend Bennett. My boat came with InstaTrim. InstaTrim works fine. Don't bother with a doel-fin or something that mounts "over the prop". I don't think they work, others like them.

Others can answer your other questions better than me.

Congratulations!

A Doel-Fin may help with reducing your time to plane and being able to stay on plane at a lower speed. It obviously won't help with side to side leveling. For that you definately need trim tabs. I'd run the boat the way it is so that you know how it works without either.

Depending on the condition of the gelcoat you may need to:
1. sand
2. compound (3M Super Duty or Meguiars #44 Heavy Duty Color Restorer)
3. polish (3M Finesse-It II or Meguiars #50 Boat Cleaner/Polish)
4. wax (Collinite's No. 885 Special Heavy Duty Fleetwax)

Definately use an electric buffer. Especially on step #3.

There are lots of topics in the archive about both trim tabs and detailing. Try the seach engine http://continuouswave.com/htdig/ .

Have fun!
