Topic: Bringing an engine out of long storage

To condense the story, I am in the process of buying a 1999 Outrage 17 with a Merc Optimax 135. A great deal, but the boat has been in storage and not used since summer 2000.Assuming the engine was properly fogged, what can go wrong with it? I have been told by Merc dealers that 1) the oil injectors may be clogged and need replacement, 2) the water pump impeller shoud be replaced no matter what, and 3) the carbs should be cleaned (this last one is odd since I though the 99 Optimax 135 was a DFI engine). Any thoughts anyone? If the engine is reasonable and the sale goes through, I'll post the story and pictures on Cetacea

I wouldn't buy it without a mechanical inspection by a certified Mercury technician.He would run a compression test, a spark test, check the lower unit lube, start and run the engine to operating temp and check for water flow among other things. After this he will either give it a clean bill of health or present you with an estimate for repairs. We charge $150.00 for the inspection but it will vary depending on the dealer and location. Well worth it, as $150.00 doesn't go very far when repairs are needed. Dick |

Thanks for the advice. I will be having a Merc certified mechanic look at the engine next week.What about the comments concerning clogged oil injectors and the water pump. Are these likely to go bad in an engine with 30 or so hours on it and 2years in storage? |

I can't tell you anything about the oil injectors, but personally I would replace the water pump at that age regardless of hours of use. The rubber gets stiff and bent with age and isn't as efficient at pumping water as it was when it was new.
