This is a great forum. Thanks to those responsible for making it available.

I'm on my second whaler. Contrary to conventional boating practice, I went down in size, instead of bigger. My first was a 1976 21' Outrage that I bought from the original owner. I had it for 3 years before the motor died (that too was original). Faced with the repower or upgrade decision, I decided to sell the hull. I cleaned her up nice and shiny, parked her on Pacific Coast Highway with a 4 sale sign, and sold it that first day. Guy came over with cash that night! I sold for more than I had paid for--maybe my price was too low, but $$ was tight and it went to a good home. Since I know where she is moored, I get to visit her when I am out harbor cruising.

Whaler no. 2 is a 1998 13' Classic Anniversary Edition. It sat in a dealers warehouse unrigged until I bought it 2 years ago when that dealer went bankrupt (San Diego). I rigged it with a Mercury 25 hp 4 stroke that I had won in a raffle at my local dealer (Schock Boats in Newport Beach). The motor had come off of a demo boat they cut in half at a boat show.

This beautiful Classic gets compliments every time I launch her, with the light blue gelcoat, beautiful wood, etc. Its the firt new boat I have ever owned, and it does make a difference. My favorite is to tow it to Tahoe during the summer, where it can be used on the crystal blue waters. I would not be able to do that without the 4 stroke (thanks air quality big brother).

However, I plan to "upgrade" to a 25' Outrage in a couple of years. I much prefer the standing helm position and the room.
If any local members want to "raft up" in Newport (Beach) Harbor, please contact me.

I too have a 13 ft 1998 40th anniversary edition. We love the boat but made a few changes. Off came the 40 merc and a Honda BF 40 was installed. Next the finish on the wood cracked-a factory defect on almost all 250 examples. Wanting a backrest we re did the interior but raised the rear seat and console 3 inches. The backrest looks like a supersport and has a matching cushion. A red bimini top finishes off the package. Did you have any problems with the wood?

Yes, I too have problems with the clear finish on the wood cracking, and the varnish thin in places. Short of a complete sanding and refinishing job, is there a product that could be easily applied as an interim solution?

I have no. 112. What is yours?

#98 We went to Boston Whaler and they said they couldn't help us but gave us the name of the individual who did replacement work for boats that were still under warrenty. They did really nice work but it takes a long time 3-5 months.
